Electives in Medical and Health Sciences Education

Medical and Health Sciences Education electives are designed for medical students, residents and students in the other health professions who view education as part of their career. During these electives, they will be exposed to the broad field of health sciences education, including pedagogical principles, curriculum, assessment, education research and development, and the role of the clinician-as-teacher in undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty development settings.

In addition to the course leaders, various instructors from the McGill Institute of Health Sciences Education will facilitate small group sessions on selected topics in health sciences education. Learners will develop essential teaching related knowledge and skills through interactive lectures, group discussions, individual and group projects, and participation in the activities of the Institute of Health Sciences Education and other faculty-led educational initiatives (eg. faculty development workshops). Residents may also have the opportunity to observe and/or participate in training activities in different settings (Simulation Centre, lectures at McIntyre, clinical teaching, etc.).

This non-clinical elective is intended for clerkship students in their 3rd or 4th year of the undergraduate medical curriculum at McGill, as well as for residents and fellows at all levels of postgraduate training. The program welcomes a maximum of 12 students per year.
