DOCUMENTS: S-99-34(REV), S-99-41, S-99-42 Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. Mr. Kovacs moved, seconded by Mr. Maricar, that the following members of the SUS Executive be given speaking rights at the meeting: Ms. Zainab Abdurrahman Mr. Arif Chowdhury Mr. Jerome Farrell The motion carried. (1) MINUTES OF MARCH 7, 2000 S-99-41 Prof. Paquette moved, seconded by Prof. Barrette, that the minutes be approved. The motion carried. (2) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES There was no business arising from the minutes. (3) ANNOUNCEMENTS Dean Shaver reminded members to keep sending announcements to the Faculty Offices. There were no announcements for the current meeting. (4) REPORTS OF COMMITTEES (a) Academic Committee S-99-42 SECTION A: NEW PROGRAMS - Ad hoc Joint Physics and Computer Science Program (AC-99-147) (for an individual student) Prof. Barrette moved, seconded by Prof. ThÇrien, that the above ad hoc program be adopted. The motion carried. SECTION B: MAJOR PROGRAM REVISIONS There were no major program revisions. SECTION C: MINOR PROGRAM REVISIONS There were no minor program revisions. The motion carried. - MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS 189-326A Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos (AC-99-135[Rev]) 3 credits 189-376A Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics (AC-99-136[Rev]) 3 credits Prof. GowriSankaran moved, seconded by Prof. Wolfson, that the above courses be adopted. 704.2 There was some discussion concerning possible confusion between the titles of the above two courses (the first course is for Major students; the second for Honours students), but it was agreed that students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics would not find the titles confusing. The motion carried. SECTION E: MAJOR COURSE REVISIONS - ATMOSPHERIC & OCEANIC SCIENCES 195-700A/B/C Ph.D. Proposal Seminar (AC-99-145) 1 credit (Changes: full-year[D] to single semester, course title, credit weight [from 0 to 1]) Prof. Lin moved, seconded by Prof. Roulet, that the changes be approved. The motion carried. SECTION F: Minor Course Revisions & Other (For Information Only) Minor Course Changes (AC-99-140) REPORTS OF COMMITTEES (Continued) (b) Other i. Committee on Materials Science 704.3 Prof. B. Lennox, on behalf of Prof. P. GrÅtter, reported concerning the above committee. He said that the report of the committee was currently in a draft stage, would be a survey of materials activities at McGill, and would recommend directions for the university to take. ii. Ad hoc Graduate Studies Committee 704.4 Prof. B. Lennox said a redraft of a report was almost ready to be examined by the committee. iii. Ad hoc Constitution Review Committee S-99-34(REV) - Associate Dean Mendelson Motion 704.5 Be it resolved that the Constitution of the Faculty of Science be amended as indicated in document S-99- 34(REV) and that the amendments take effect on September 1, 2000. 704.6 A quorum was challenged and found not to be present at 3:45 p.m. Dean Shaver said that, from that point forward, the meeting would be unofficial, so there would be no motions or actions. 704.7 Mr. Kovacs said that the next Faculty meeting would be held in late May, and students would likely not attend. He therefore asked that the Constitutional issue be discussed at the current meeting, to allow student input. Dean Shaver invited those present to informally discuss this issue and the rest of the Agenda items. Notes of the discussion concerning document S-99- 34(Rev) and other Agenda items are in the Faculty Offices, following the permanent copy of the Minutes.
