DOCUMENTS: S-01-1(Revised) S-01-7 to S-01-14 Dean Shaver called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. (1) ADOPTION OF AGENDA 201.1 Item #6(c), Reports of Committees: Prof. J. Mogil would be describing the proposal to create a centre for pain research. Prof. GowriSankaran moved, seconded by Prof. White, that the amended agenda be adopted. The motion carried. (2) CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES a) Bachelor of Science S-01-12 Prof. GowriSankaran moved, seconded by Prof. Bell, that the above candidates be recommended to the Senate Steering Committee for the Bachelor of Science degree. The motion carried. b) Diploma in Environment S-01-13 Prof. Moore moved, seconded by Prof. GowriSankaran, that the above candidate be recommended to the Senate Steering Committee for the Diploma in Environment. The motion carried. c) Diploma in Meteorology S-01-14 There were no students receiving this Diploma. Prof. GowriSankaran further moved, seconded by Prof. Schmidt, that the Dean be given discretionary power to make such changes in the degree list as would be necessary to prevent injustice. The motion carried. (3) MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 S-01-8 203.1 In response to a member, who said that a question he had asked at the last Faculty of Science meeting was not included in the minutes, Dean Shaver said that he would look into it and that if appropriate, the minutes would be amended at the next Faculty meeting. Prof. Farrell moved, seconded by Mr. Farrell, that the minutes be approved pending the above possible change. The motion carried. (4) BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES There was no business arising from the minutes. (5) SEATING OF STUDENT MEMBERS S-01-1 (REVISED) Dean Shaver drew members' attention to the revised version of document S-01-1. (6) REPORTS OF COMMITTEES a) Committee on Student Standing S-01-9 Dean Shaver pointed out the report. b) Academic Committee S-01-10 SECTION A: NEW PROGRAMS (1) Ad Hoc Joint Major in Biology and Psychology: Neuroscience Option (AC-01-2) Prof. White moved, seconded by Prof. Mogil, that the above ad hoc program be approved. The motion carried. (2) Ad Hoc B.Sc. Joint Major Program in Computer Science & Music Technology (AC-01-3) Prof. ThÇrien moved, seconded by Prof. GowriSankaran, that the above ad hoc program be approved. The motion carried. SECTION B: MAJOR PROGRAM CHANGES None SECTION C: NEW COURSES None SECTION D: MAJOR COURSE CHANGES None SECTION E: MINOR PROGRAM CHANGES Mathematics & Statistics - Faculty Program in Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science (AC-01-4) Prof. GowriSankaran moved, seconded by Prof. Drury, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. - Honours in Applied Mathematics (AC-01-5) Prof. Schmidt moved, seconded by Prof. Drury, that the program changes be approved. The motion carried. SECTION F: Minor Course Changes & Other (For Information Only) - Minor Course Changes (AC-01-1) c) MOTION: Proposal to Create a Centre for Pain Research S-01-7 - Prof. J. Mogil 206.1 Prof. Mogil briefly described the above proposal, and answered members' questions. Prof. Mogil moved, seconded by Prof. White, that the above motion be approved. The motion carried. d) Report of Science Senators on the Proposed Rearrangement of Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research S-01-11 - Prof. P. Farrell Discussion: Committee of the Whole - Chair, Prof. T. Moore 206.2 Faculty moved into the Committee of the Whole at 3:25 p.m. 206.3 Faculty moved out of the Committee of the Whole at 4:10 p.m. 206.4 A summary of the discussion of the Committee of the Whole is in the Faculty Offices, attached to the permanent copy of the Minutes. e) Other Reports or Academic Business There were no other reports or academic business. (7) REPORT ON ACTIONS OF SENATE Senate Meeting of September 12, 2001 - Prof. Farrell This meeting was brief, the agenda containing little that was controversial! After a resolution on the death of Helen Gault and the introduction of new Senators, the Principal called for a moment of silence and reflection on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The Principal explained the agreement between Universitas 21, of which McGill is a member, and the Thomson Corp. to establish an online university, courses starting in 2003. Prof. Noumoff asked if McGill has a policy on human cloning, to which V.-P. BÇlanger replied that we are committed to the Trin Council Policy on ethical conduct for research involving humans and, therefore, current McGill policy forbids human cloning. A number of new programs were approved, revised guidelines regarding failures in FGSR accepted and a change of name for Mining and Metallurgical Engineering to Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering adopted. Prof. De Takacsy presented a memo regarding a Review of Disciplinary Regulations, and Senate then adjourned at 3:30 p.m. (8) MEMBERS' QUESTION PERIOD 208.1 In response to a question, Dean Shaver said that the issue of implementing a grade of A+ had been discussed at the Academic Committee, and that further Academic Committee discussion would occur. (9) OTHER BUSINESS 209.1 Dean Shaver announced that as a result of the Fall Convocation's having been rescheduled, the November Faculty of Science meeting would now be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 12, 2001 in Redpath Museum Auditorium.
