Dr. Alice Benjamin Fund / Fonds Dre Alice Benjamin

The Dr. Benjamin touch (Version française ci-dessous)

With maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Alice Benjamin beginning to contemplate retirement, the time to thank her is now. Let’s ensure that her lessons—of gratitude, humility and resourcefulness—forever live on at McGill.

In so doing, you will be carrying some of that special Dr. Benjamin touch into the future… for the benefit of mothers and babies at home and around the world. THANK YOU!

A gift to education

Dr. Alice Benjamin has delivered tens of thousands of babies, inspired decades of McGill residents, and significantly reduced stillbirths and miscarriages in her high-risk patients.

But if someone compliments her on her achievements, she redirects. Praise, she feels, should be given to her peers in the developing world.

“Look at those doctors there with so little, yet they can manage so much. How can they do that? And how can I translate that here?” she asks.

For Dr. Benjamin, Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, there is much to be learned from this kind of resourcefulness.

It is in support of this educational philosophy, with its emphasis on appreciating what you have and making do, that a group of Dr. Benjamin’s former patients, along with their families and friends, have come together to launch a campaign in her name via McGill Global Health Programs and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in the McGill Faculty of Medicine. Will you join us?

Giving the Dr. Benjamin vision a forever home at McGill

In the first stage of our campaign, the Dr. Alice Benjamin Fund will provide recipients with an opportunity to witness maternal health care as it is practiced in low-resource settings. While learning alongside their counterparts in developing countries, recipients will also impart valuable knowledge and skills. Although preference will be given to medical residents, the award will be open to undergraduate students, graduate students and fellows of any McGill Faculty of Medicine program or school.

There are very few awards of this kind directed at residents, says Dr. Benjamin, so there is a tremendous need for this at the University. It is hoped that the Fund will one day be able to provide exchanges for foreign medical residents to visit McGill as well as support for large-scale research projects, postdoctoral fellowships and possibly even a chair in maternal and women’s health. The Fund will also bring guest speakers for grand rounds and lecture series in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

What you can do

A committee of grateful families has already raised more than $100,000 for the Dr. Alice Benjamin Fund. To meet their $1 million target, they are appealing to other families, as well as to Dr. Benjamin’s former students and residents, her past and present colleagues, and friends of McGill Global Health Programs and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

No gift is too small. Each and every one is an important “thank you” to Dr. Benjamin.

Meet the Project Team:
Joanne Vrakas
  • Grateful patient of Dr. Benjamin

“During my first pregnancy, we found out the baby was breech. To complicate things, my mother was killed when I was four months pregnant. I was devastated. Dr. B. stepped in and somehow not only made sure the baby was ok, but became like a second mother to me. She is part of our family now. Not only does this initiative honour her, it helps further what she loves to do most: teaching and connecting with people, promoting health and well-being, and inspiring the next generation to become better doctors.”

Lorne Lieberman
  • Spouse of grateful patient of Dr. Benjamin

“My wife and I moved to Montreal in 2005, when she was pregnant with our second child. A close friend steered us toward Dr. Benjamin, who would go on to deliver our three Montreal-born children. From her professional expertise to her ability to communicate with her patients, Dr. Benjamin was an angel three times over for us. Like so many people, I wondered how we as a community could give back to her. Creating a fund in her name that would support McGill residents traveling to and learning from under-resourced countries seems such a fitting recognition of Dr. Benjamin.”

Armand Aalamian
  • Former medical resident of Dr. Benjamin

“Dr. Benjamin has influenced my career and my life for 30 years now, first as a medical student, then as a resident, and now as a colleague. Her love of learning and dedication to her patients is contagious. I feel fortunate to have had such an incredible role model in my life. Now with an award in her name, we can continue what Alice Benjamin has advocated for her entire career: excellence in providing care to pregnant women rooted in an evidence-based approach.”

Andrew Zakhari
  • Current medical resident of Dr. Benjamin

"Dr. Benjamin has been an incredible role model and teacher to me over the past 5 years of residency. Not only is her devotion to her patients unparalleled, but she genuinely cares for each and every resident in OBGYN, doing her best to impart some of her tremendous knowledge with each patient encounter. It is never too late at night or too busy a shift for Dr. Benjamin to engage in some teaching, drawing our attention to the fascinating aspects of a particular case or ensuring we really appreciate the medical complexities with which we are surrounded. Her love of not only obstetrics, but medicine at large is quickly noticeable in any discussion, and her contribution to medical education at McGill throughout her remarkable career cannot be overstated. I am thrilled that the community is rallying to honour her legacy with the creation of the Dr. Alice Benjamin Fund, which will provide amazing opportunities for residents to participate in global health projects around the world."
