Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Teaching and Learning Services hosted its annual 3MT competition on March 15, 2017. It was another amazing showcase of the contributions and diversity of McGill graduate research. The presenters wowed us with their three-minute presentations aimed for a diverse non-specialist audience about their research and its impact on the community.
The presentations were recorded and streamed live online.
During the event, the following judges represented McGill and selected three participants to represent McGill at the CAGS 3MT Eastern regional finals and concours ACFAS Ma Thèse en 180 secondes.
Angelique Mannella
Angelique Mannella is McGill's first Associate Vice-Principal of Innovation and Partnerships. In this role, Ms. Mannella has a mandate to promote and expand McGill's innovation agenda by creating new partnership and entrepreneurship opportunities for McGill researchers. Her team, which currently encompasses the groups Invention Development & Entrepreneurship Assistance (IDEA), McGill University Business Engagement Centre (MUBEC), and Innovation in Practice, works to create a bridge between research and application, by providing opportunities for both students and researchers to orient their work toward engaging with social or market challenges outside the academy. Before taking on the role of AVP in June 2016, Ms. Mannella advised corporate clients and venture capital firms on R&D commercialization, investments, and joint ventures. Previously, she was the founder and CEO of Decode Global, a social enterprise that developed mobile games. She has 15 years of experience in technology product design and business development, and has worked for companies such as Cisco Systems and Nokia in North America, Europe and Asia. Ms. Mannella is a professional engineer, and has degrees from McGill University (BEng), the London School of Economics (MSc), and INSEAD (MBA). She is also an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with the Digital Entrepreneurship Program at the World Bank Group in Washington D.C.
Nicolas Cermakian
I am a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry (Associate memberships in Physiology, Microbiology/Immunology, Neurology/Neurosurgery). My Laboratory of Molecular Chronobiology is located at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, where I am also Director of Academic Affairs. My research and teaching deal with circadian clocks and their links with various aspects of physiology (e.g. immunology, brain function, endocrinology). Indeed, most processes in our body show 24-h rhythms (e.g. sleep/wake cycles, hormones, defense against microbes, metabolism), and disturbances of these rhythms (e.g. in shift workers) can increase the risk of various medical conditions such as cancer, metabolic problems and cardio-vascular disorders. Outside McGill, I am the founder and President of the Canadian Society for Chronobiology, and I sit on the Board of the (international) Society for Research on Biological Rhythms. Related to the 3MT initiative, I have had dozens of media appearances to communicate my research, and I have been involved in many professional development and lay public events.
Judith Ritter
Judith Ritter is an Award-winning public radio and print journalist. She was on air with the CBC both locally and nationally for two decades. She also taught oral and written communication at McGill as a faculty lecturer. Ms. Ritter currently contributes to public radio outlets in the U.S. and writes for publications such as Globe and Mail, South China morning post (Hong Kong), the straits times (Singapore) and a variety of non-profits.
Marthe Kassouf
Marthe Kassouf received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in 2008. Since then, she has been working as a researcher at the Hydro Quebec Research Institute (IREQ), where she has been contributing to the implementation of different projects aiming at the enhancement of the information infrastructure supporting the power grid, mainly in the areas of wireless communication systems, time synchronization and cybersecurity. Since 2013, Marthe also has been an adjunct professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill since. Her research interests are in telecommunication networks, time synchronization systems, power grid automation and cybersecurity for smart grids. Active Board member of the McGill Women Alumnae Association since 2010, she is currently the president of this association whose mission is to promote the advancement of McGill female students and graduates leadership and their positive impact on the University and the community at large.
