Inventing New Chemistry for Sustainable Utilization of Natural Resources

Chemical products are essential in the modern society, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials, electronics, and energy. They have also affected us adversely and are unsustainable. Our lab and the McGill Green Chemistry Center have explored new chemistry to simplify synthesis, decrease waste generation, and maximize resource utilization for chemical products.

Working with communities to design multifunctional landscapes
Elena Bennett, Department of Natural Resource Sciences/MSE. FAES

Although working landscapes can provide multiple ecosystem services, including food, minerals recreation, climate regulation, and flood control, the focus often narrows to food production, mining or oil, which may undermine provision of the other key services. A key goal for ecosystem service science is to understand how landscapes provide multiple services. We developed and empirically tested a modeling framework that quantitatively links landscape connectivity, biodiversity, and ecosystem services in Monteregie, Quebec.

Making sustainability sciences central to our pedagogical practice

The Waste for Life Project

The sustainability of globally accelerating rates of biological invasion

Biological invasions – the introduction and spread of alien species – are accelerating in ecosystems worldwide. Some invaders may be innocuous, whereas others cause ecosystem disruptions. The nonlinear accumulation of invaders and their impacts is a sustainability issue. Even a small reduction in the rate of invasion can yield disproportionate benefits.
