We are pleased to announce that the SSTI Executive Committee has, with recommendations from the Advisory Committee, selected three SSTI Research Themes for three years of funding (ca. $400K p.a.). These themes reflect the major research areas addressed in the SSTI workshop’s 25 prominent ideas and the Grand Challenge NOIs.
Each Research Theme will be headed by three co-leads. The co-leads have strong research credentials in different facets of the respective theme and bring a vision and the demonstrated experience necessary to create cross-disciplinary research programs that align with the SSTI principles. The three selected Research Themes and their co-leads are as follows:
- Creating Sustainable Materials for the Future (Nil Basu, George Demopoulos, Audrey Moores)
- Sustaining Landscapes for the Future (Elena Bennett, Brian Robinson, Laxmi Sushama)
- Adapting Cities for the Future (Andy Gonzalez, Kevin Manaugh, David Wachsmuth)
The co-leads of each theme will be reaching out to other members of the McGill community to form strong and interdisciplinary teams. If you wish to express your interest in contributing to or being updated about any of the themes, please feel free to contact the co-leads directly.
SSTI funding will be available for one or two additional Research Themes that may be developed over the next year or two. There are also smaller amounts ($10k-$100K) available to fund high-risk projects and proof-of principle or pre-commercial prototyping activities. Further information on these additional funding opportunities will be released shortly.
