Program Requirements

The Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science provides training and intensive experience in clinical research related to health and rehabilitation by asking the right questions through research design, analysis, interpretation and presentation of results. The program includes a comprehensive exam, research proposal, thesis and an oral defense.

Thesis

A thesis for the doctoral degree must constitute original scholarship and must be a distinct contribution to knowledge. It must show familiarity with previous work in the field and must demonstrate ability to plan and carry out research, organize results, and defend the approach and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The research presented must meet current standards of the discipline; as well, the thesis must clearly demonstrate how the research advances knowledge in the field. Finally, the thesis must be written in compliance with norms for academic and scholarly expression and for publication in the public domain.

    Overview

    Phys & Occ Therapy : Introduction to qualitative inquiry in rehabilitation sciences. Emphasis is placed on prominent research paradigms, qualitative research methodologies, and qualitative research methods as they relate to research on topics pertaining to rehabilitation.

    Phys & Occ Therapy : Theoretical and practical basis for utilization of electronic equipment for quantitative measurement in rehabilitation research. Ambulatory assistive devices, electronic plates and instrumentation to assess normal and pathological human movement will be used to demonstrate the application of theory and techniques for quantitative analysis of human performance. Recording, reduction and analysis of electromyographic, kinetic and kinematic data included.

Topics include: general concepts behind statistical model building, selection of appropriate model, preparatory descriptive analyses prior to regression modelling, fitting, interpreting and evaluating some linear and logistic regression models.
