The opportunity for this project arose when the McGill Gault Nature Reserve (GNR) in Mont-Saint-Hilaire proposed a mechanical engineering project (MECH 463). The mission is to help them reduce their carbon footprint by providing them with a less environmentally-harmful electric ATV to perform their every day maintenance tasks.
The project aims to convert a gas-powered All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) to an electric-powered one to be used by GNR. The ATV will have to fulfill similar requirements to those satisfied by the gas-powered ATV’s.
The project was started last year. However, due to time and funding constraints the project delivery had to be postponed to this year. Therefore, time this year was allocated to improve the design and perform extensive testing.
The electric ATV will need to provide similar power and energy consumption, towing capacity and comfort than the ATV’s currently used by the GNR and the outcomes will be shared to the community through increased media exposure (written press and internet; YouTube), at project’s exhibition and presentation and advertising at the GNR.
