Details: LGBTQ+ learners and allies from the Faculty of Medicine, including residents and fellows (PGME), undergraduate medical learners (UGME), dentistry students, students from the schools of physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and nursing are invited to attend our Connect & Learn Series, which consists of 3 confidential group meetings interspersed throughout the year. The series is designed to address the social and psychological issues facing the LGBTQ+ learners in the Health Professions. The primary goal of the sessions is to create safe spaces for conversation and shared fellowship around a curated curriculum of diverse speakers.

Topics of conversation will include identifying micro-aggressions towards LGBTQ+ health profession learners in their daily lives and within society as a whole, and how to address them within clinical spaces from a place of controversy with civility; exploring and addressing power, privilege, value systems, and intersectionality; and recognizing the commonalities and differences that exist among people and cultures, and how these factors influence relationships with others.

Each group meeting will have a dedicated theme. A guest speaker may be invited to the meeting for the first 30’ to share their personal reflections on their own journey and offer their experience-based expertise in the form of perspective and practical tips. Upon the guest speaker’s departure, a group discussion inspired by the talk will be facilitated by the Wellness Advisor, Amanda Hankins. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
