Welcome to the ACTOR Project Archive!
The ACTOR Project (2018-2025) was an international transdisciplinary partnership funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) that linked research and creation with the goal of bringing timbre and orchestration to the forefront of scholarship, practice, and public awareness through collaborations among world-class artists, humanists, and scientists.
This site contains basic information about ACTOR's mission, research, activities, partners, and projects funded. It was created with the aim to preserve the partnership's main accomplishments.
Timbre and Orchestration Resource – TOR
Most of ACTOR's outputs, including research project reports, articles, essays, interviews, and videos, are housed in an open-access web platform called TOR or Timbre and Orchestration Resource (timbreandorchestration.org). This site aims to support the analysis, creation, and teaching of timbre and orchestration by providing materials and tools for users at different levels of expertise, from amateurs to experts.
Timbre & Orchestration Summer School – TOSS
The ACTOR project initiated and hosted the three first editions of the Timbre & Orchestration Summer School (TOSS), respectively held in Thessaloniki (2023), Vancouver (2024), and Montreal (2025). The goal was to organize an event that would bring together researchers, students, and professionals to explore the multifaceted world of timbre and orchestration.
