Transportation & Urban Sustainability: The Ghosts of Affordable Housing - Access and Health

Our future prosperity depends not only on a sustainable material economy, but also on a sustainable social economy. As populations increasingly urbanize, access to affordable housing -- and its urban landscape assets -- becomes a critical marker of equity, and an indicator of a socially just and sustainable society. Prof. Debbie Niemeier's (UC Davis) talk used the rise and fall of affordable housing in San Francisco to explore what happens when dubious infrastructure decisions coupled with a lack of government transparency are confronted with sudden economic growth.

This public seminar was hosted on May 1st 2014, by Marianne Hatzopoulou, Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, McGill University. It was offered in partnership with the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED).
