Panelists

Dr. Lorne Trottier is a co-founder of Matrox, a privately held group of companies known around  the world for their innovative computer graphics, video and imaging products. Dr. Trottier holds a Bachelor's and Master’s degree in electrical engineering from McGill University. In 2006 he was awarded a doctorate degree honoris causa by McGill and in 2011 and 2013 by l’Université de Montréal and by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) respectively. Dr. Trottier is a member of the Advisory Boards of the Faculties of Science and Engineering of McGill University as well as a Governor Emeritus of the same university. In 2003, Dr. Trottier received the prestigious Prix Lionel-Boulet, the Government of Quebec's highest honour for economic development in the area of applied technology. In 2007, Dr. Trottier was named a Member of the Order of Canada.

 

 

 

Dr. Dror Etzion is an Assistant Professor of strategy and organizations at the Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, and an associate member of the McGill School of the Environment.  He received his PhD from IESE Business School in Barcelona.  His research agenda focuses on the use of metrics and information in organizational settings, primarily metrics for sustainability.  In other research, he examines the effects of industry affiliation and geographic location on firm environmental performance. At McGill, he teaches the MBA core course on Markets and Globalization as well as an elective on Strategies for Sustainable Development.  Prior to his academic career, he worked in the Israeli high-tech sector. Dr. Etzion is a Faculty Fellow with the Marcel Desautels Institute of Integrated Management.

  

Dr. Yaoyao Fiona Zhao is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in McGill University in Canada. She received her Bachelor of Engineering degree from Beijing Institute of Technology, China in 2003. She received her Master of Engineering (First Class Honors) and Ph.D. degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2006 and 2010, respectively. She has work as a guest researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), USA and post-doctoral research fellow at Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France from 2010 till 2012. She has authored 1 book and numerous journal articles in the general field of Design and Manufacturing. She heads the Additive Design and Manufacturing Laboratory (ADML) at McGill University..

 

 

Dr. Catherine Morency is a civil engineer and Associate Professor at Polytechnique Montréal. Prof. Morency holds the Mobilité research chair on the implementation of sustainability in transportation. She is member of CIRRELT (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur les réseau d’entreprise, la logistique et les transports) and responsible for the « mobilité et transport » theme in CIRODD (Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l’opérationnalisation du développement durable). She is interested in individuals' travel behaviour, namely the use of all transportation modes including active and alternative types (carsharing, bikesharing, ridesharing, taxi). Morency also conducts research on data collection methods, data processing and visualisation. All of her research aim to improve knowledge, methods, and models for the assessment of sustainability levels in transportation, urban projects, and policies. She supervises and co-supervises approximately twenty students at the Masters and Ph.D. levels.

 

Christian Mascle

Dr. Christian Mascle is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Polytechnique Montréal. He is a member of REGAL (Regroupement stratégique en recherches sur l'aluminium au Québec), he is responsible for the « Aeronautic » theme in CIRODD (Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l’opérationnalisation du développement durable), and he is the leader for CRIAQ-NSERC project: “Process for advanced management and technologies of aircraft end-of-life” (with Bombardier, Bell Helicopter, BFI, Aluminerie Alouette, Sotrem-Maltech). He is interested in sustainability-sensitive design and process for products and aircrafts to facilitate end-of-life treatment. Mascle also conducts research in assembly/disassembly and task planning, product life-cycle modelling, design methodology, intelligent CAD, design for assembly, services and disassembly of products. He supervises and co-supervises many students at the Masters and Ph.D. levels.

 

Dr. John C. Crittenden is a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Director of its' Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems. In this position, he leads the creation of an integrated initiative in Sustainable Urban Systems.  He is a Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Eminent Scholar in Sustainable Systems and occupies the Hightower Chair for Sustainable Technologies. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and Chinese Academy of Engineering. An accomplished expert in sustainability, pollution prevention, physical-chemical treatment processes, nanotechnology, air and water treatment, Dr. Crittenden has been involved in more than 60 funded research projects, totaling more than $27 million. Currently, he is working with a group of academic institutions on Sustainable Urban Engineering with a view to connect social decision making, regional development, material flows, energy use and the local, regional and global environmental impacts of various urban development scenarios. Visit Dr. Crittenden's webpage with Georgia Tech.  

 

Chris Turner is an author, speaker and strategist, providing Canada’s authoritative voice on sustainability and the global cleantech boom. His latest book is The War on Science: Muzzled Scientists and Wilful Blindness in Stephen Harper's Canada. His 2011 book, The Leap: How to Survive and Thrive in the Sustainable Economy, was published in 2011; the Globe and Mail called it "one of the most arresting arguments for building a green economy yet in print." He is also the author of the bestsellers The Geography of Hope and Planet Simpson, and his feature writing has earned nine National Magazine Awards. Turner was the Green Party candidate in the 2012 Calgary Centre byelection and a 2013 Berton House writer-in-residence in Dawson City, Yukon. Dr. Timothy G. Gutowski is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA, USA. His research interests focus on the relationship between manufacturing and sustainability at various scales. His recent work looks at global manufacturing and its economic benefits as well as energy/carbon challenges. Gutowski was the Director of MIT’s Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity (1994-2004), and the Associate Department Head for Mechanical Engineering (2001-2005). From 1999 to 2001 he was the chairman of the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy panel on Environmentally Benign Manufacturing. He has over 150 technical publications, two books and seven patents and patent applications. His most recent book is: “Thermodynamics and the Destruction of Resources” Cambridge University Press, 2011 (with B. Bakshi and S. Sekulic). Visit Dr. Gutowski's webpage with MIT.

Dr. Greg Keoleian is the Peter M. Wege Endowed Professor of Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan and serves as Director of the Center for Sustainable Systems Keoleian’s research focuses on the development and application of life cycle models and sustainability metrics to guide the design and improvement of products and technology. He has pioneered new methods including life cycle design, life cycle optimization of product replacement, life cycle cost analysis and life cycle based sustainability assessment.  Dr. Keoleian has led over 50 life cycle projects including analyses of conventional and alternative vehicle technology, renewable energy technologies, buildings and infrastructure, consumer products and packaging, and a variety of food systems.   Dr. Keoleian served a two year term as the President of the International Society for Industrial Ecology from 2011-2012 and recently helped launch an Engineering Sustainable Systems masters’ degree program to train a new breed of engineers in sustainable systems. Visit Dr. Keoleian's webpage with the Center for Sustainable Systems at the University of Michigan.
