Available to two Clerkship students.

The goal of this elective is to help the student understand the strengths and limitations of laboratories and their use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The student will learn how to do this by dealing with real problems. They will be helped to do literature searches, follow-up abnormal patient results, sign out complex test results and deal with work flow and management problems in the laboratory and test centre. At the end of their elective, they will be helped to prepare and give a formal presentation to the staff. The basis of this presentation will be a project on which they have worked.

Open to one clerkship student for four weeks. The student will be introduced to the functioning of a large biochemistry laboratory equipped with modern automated equipment. Teaching sessions will cover approaches to method selections, method comparisons, assessment of test utility and test interpretation. Research into new hormones, metabolites and DNA diagnostics is being carried out. The student will also be expected to attend out-patient clinics (Lipid, Adult Genetics, Calcium Metabolism) staffed by medical biochemists. This elective will allow the student to gain first-hand experience in the daily activities of a medical biochemist in a tertiary hospital setting.
