In-Patient Service
This is a 32 bed unit with emphasis placed on short-term treatment, offering the student an opportunity to participate in the diagnostics and treatment of the full range of psychiatric diseases. Supervision is by full-time Attending Staff, with the student as a member of the treatment team in a primary care role. The elective is available to one student.
Out-Patient Clinic
This is a very active area with the student assigned in a primary care role in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of neurotic, psychotic, and characterological disturbances. The student's work would involve assessment of new referrals to OPD, some short-term psychotherapy and participating in Neuroleptic Clinic, Affective Disorder, and Geriatric Clinics. The student may elect to spend part of the time in the Psychopharmacological Division of the Clinic, which affords the opportunity to gain knowledge in the clinical application of psychotropic drugs. Supervision is by Attending Staff. The elective is available to one student.
Consultation Service
The student will have the opportunity to become a member of the Consultation Service, which deals with the evaluation and treatment of psychological aspects of medical illness and psychosomatic disorders. Special emphasis will be placed on geriatric consultations and liaison work with the appropriate medical-surgical services. Supervision is by Attending Staff. The elective is available to one student.
Emergency and Community Service
The student becomes a member of a very active psychiatry team dealing with psychiatric emergencies. Supervision is by Attending Staff. The elective is available to 1 student.
Psychogeriatrics
This elective provides excellent exposure to the psychiatry of old age. In liaison with geriatric medicine, numerous cases are evaluated and treated in three different settings: Psychiatry In-Patient, Medical-Surgical In-Patient, and a Psychogeriatric Out-Patient Clinic, including home visits. Supervision is by a psychogeriatrician. The elective is available to one student.
