OSLER AWARD

"To be presented to a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine who, in the opinion of the senior medical students, has made the most outstanding contribution to their medical education."

Criteria which may be of use to the students in their selection include:

  1. Quality of Teaching (formal lectures and small groups): - comprehensive knowledge - preparation - enthusiasm and ability to arouse interest - effective communication

  2. Quality of Student-Teacher interaction: - encouragement of student participation - setting of high standards - motivation of students

  3. Quality of Bedside Teaching: - teaching at a high academic level while respecting both the patient and the student

  4. Quality of Laboratory Teaching

  5. Quality of Patient Care provided: - clinical excellence - empathy to patients needs and concerns - conveys clear and relevant patient education

  6. Interest in Student's Personal Development and Well Being: - sensitivity to student needs and concerns - accessibility

  7. Commitment to Evaluation Process: - evaluations that stress understanding rather than memorization - interest and willingness to provide constructive feedback

  8. Philosophy of Education

  9. Presents a Positive Role Model

The Graduating Class, each year, selects the recipient of the Osler Award through a ballot system. Should no one candidate be nominated by a class majority (>50%) in the first ballot, then a second ballot with the top nominees will be resubmitted to the class, from which the recipient will be selected.

This is a student voted award that recognizes a clinical teacher that best models a commendable life-work balance through expert professionalism, clinical competence and exemplary self-care.

THE RONALD DOUGLAS NAYMARK AWARD

Established by the Medical Class of 1984 in memory of Ronald Douglas Naymark, B.Sc., ’80, M.D.,C.M.(McGill)’84, this award is given to that member of the graduating class who most enriches the life of the class in the eyes of his or her peers. The award seeks to recognize an individual who inspires trust and confidence, optimism and enthusiasm in his or her medical colleagues. The individual is a participant in class activities and is in satisfactory academic standing.

You are asked to nominate below the member of your class, who, in your opinion, most exemplifies the above qualities for the Ronald Douglas Naymark Award. (Unless one individual is nominated by a class majority on this submission, the names of the top 3 nominees will be resubmitted to you).

STRACHAN ALEXANDER HARTLEY AWARD

Established by the medical class of 2006 in memory of Strachan Alexander Hartley, B.Sc., M.Sc., M.D.,C.M., to commemorate Dr. Hartley’s legacy of friendship, sport, and scholarship. Awarded by the graduating class to a member of the class who is an active participant in class activities and demonstrates athletic leadership and academic excellence.

I would like to nominate the following for the Strachan Alexander Hartley Award:

THE ELIZABETH ANN MUNRO GORDON PRIZE

Established in memory of Dr. Elizabeth Ann Munro Gordon. Awarded to the member of the graduating class, who in the opinion of the Faculty and students, embodies the highest qualifications to practice the profession and has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. Prize donation from the Arthritis Society.

The Student Promotions Committee will choose the winner from the nominees submitted to it by the Faculty and the graduating class.

Your nominations should not be based on popularity. The candidates should have demonstrated the ability to lead. They should be seen as having the capacity to inspire trust, motivate and/or persuade others into action. These leadership skills may have been manifest in any of the following areas: student government; student societies; curricular management; academic and scholastic activities; off-campus extracurricular affairs etc.

Criteria previously identified in effective leadership are:

  • articulates goals and objectives
  • helps to identify and nurture the strengths of individuals
  • builds cohesion within group and fosters a unique group identity
  • speaks in terms of challenges and opportunities, not in terms of failures

I would like to nominate the following for the Elizabeth Ann Munro Gordon Prize:

REILLY MADSEN MEMORIAL PRIZE

Established to honor the memory of Reilly Madsen who was Manager, Records and Research, Development and Alumni Relations Services. Awarded, on recommendations from faculty and students, by the Faculty of Medicine to a student with good academic standing who has demonstrated exceptional warmth and empathy towards patients.

The Student Promotions Committee will choose the winner from nominees submitted to it by the Faculty and the graduating class.

The candidates should have demonstrated empathy with patients. Criteria which have previously been identified with empathy are:

  • makes him/herself aware of other resources available to help patient and care givers
  • shows concern for and rapport with patients and their families/friends
  • demonstrates warmth and friendliness towards patients
  • acts as advocate for patient
  • demonstrates good communication skills
  • shows sensitivity to and tolerance of cultural differences and diversity
  • works well as part of multi-disciplinary health care team

Your nomination should not be based on popularity.

I would like to nominate the following for the Reilly Madsen Memorial Prize:

ALEXANDER D. STEWART PRIZE

Founded by the late W. Grant Stewart (Arts 1885, Medicine 1888) in memory of his brother, the late Alexander D. Stewart (Medicine, 1888), to be awarded to the member of the graduating class who, in the opinion of the Faculty, presents in every respect the highest qualifications to practice the profession.

The Student Promotions Committee will choose the winner from the nominees submitted to it by the Faculty and the graduating class.

Your nominations should not be based on popularity, but rather, the qualities of participation in scholastic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement and character. In other words, in your opinion, "who is the student who presents in every respect the highest qualifications to practice the profession?"

I would like to nominate the following for the Alexander D. Stewart Prize:

DR. ALLEN SPANIER PRIZE FOR PROFESSIONALISM IN MEDICINE

Established in 1999 by Beverly Spanier, B.A. (1967) in memory of her brother, Dr. Allen Spanier, M.D., C.M. (1972). Dr. Spanier was chief of the Intensive Care Unit at the Jewish General Hospital for 21 years. Awarded annually by the Faculty of Medicine to a graduating student who has maintained high academic standing and exhibited a high standard of professionalism and compassion towards patients, their families, fellow students, and university and hospital staff during the Practice of Medicine component of the curriculum.
