Admission review process
-
Applicants will be considered for admission on their senior high school transcript (Grades 1, 2 and midyear grade 3) and all available results of the Huikao exams. Huikao/APT results must be in numeric or letter grade format (see next line).
If your HUIKAO results are presented as ‘qualified/unqualified’ (or ‘pass/fail’), or if you are in a province where the Huikao or APT is not offered, then additional external testing results are expected for the evaluation of your application. We prefer to see ACT or SAT, or final AP examination results (See U.S. High School Applicants). However, if you are not taking ACT/SAT, or have not yet taken any AP examinations, please provide other results you may have such as results for school-based graduation examinations or, if these are not available, then your rank within your grade level and school. Applicants who are not able to provide any of this information are still eligible to apply and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
If admitted, you are expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies.
If admitted to McGill, you must arrange for your school to send to McGill University an official final transcript of your complete high school record, the graduation certificate, and all final HUIKAO results.
If you write the GAOKAO, you must make arrangements to forward to us the final official results.
Minimum grades and prerequisites
The minimum requirements are normally averages of 85% or higher in each year and in all prerequisite courses. Many programs are more competitive and will require higher grades; applicants who present the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission.

Supporting documentation
It is in the applicant’s interest to complete their file as quickly as possible. When program space is limited, preference may be given to applicants who have submitted all required supporting documents/information earlier on. Should a program reach its capacity prior to the ‘supporting documents’ and/or ‘self-reporting’ deadline, incomplete applications may be cancelled.
-
Academic documents
All academic documents must be uploaded to your McGill Applicant Portal:
- Copy of Senior high school transcript, including final 1st semester results for Senior 3, or completed transcript if already graduated.
- All completed Huikao/ Academic Proficiency Test (APT) results. Note that SAT cannot be used as a substitute for the Huikao/Academic Proficiency Test (APT). Huikao/APT results must be in numeric or letter grade format. Applicants from Chinese provinces where the Huikao/APT results are noted as ‘qualified/unqualified’ or ‘pass/fail’, or where the Huikao is not offered, must present additional external academic results such as ACT/SAT scores or final AP exam results.
- If you are from a province where the Huikao is not offered (Hubei) then additional external examination information, such as SATI and SATII scores, must be presented.
- Gaokao, if written -
Proof of English proficiency
Applicants who have lived and attended school, for at least four years, in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language, are not required to provide further proof of English proficiency.
If this is not the case, official test results will be required by the supporting document deadline. Please consult Proof of English Proficiency for accepted tests and other exemptions.
-
Additional supporting documents
Certain programs will require additional supporting documents. These could be proof of French proficiency, CASPer test results, recommendation letters, personal statement, or other documents; the requirements will be different depending on the program you are applying to. If your program choice is listed below, please carefully verify the additional requirement(s):
- You have applied to Education, Music, Nursing, and/or Religious Studies
- You have applied for a Major Entrance Scholarship and/or Financial Aid
- You selected ‘Extenuating Circumstances’ on the application for admission
If none of the above apply, additional supporting documents are not considered in the admission review process and should not be submitted.
