Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)

What's special about a McGill D.M.D.?

The Faculty of Dentistry’s Undergraduate Dental Program (D.M.D.) curriculum is innovative and dynamic, reflecting the minds of our outstanding professors and their vision for training tomorrow's leaders in oral health care. First and foremost, the goal is for McGill D.M.D. graduates to be professionals who possess sound judgment. It is believed that this is the best way to ensure that their patients, and the population at large, receive the most effective care possible – that means health care that is supported by scientific evidence and a sense of social justice.

During recent years, the Undergraduate Dental Program curriculum has changed dramatically to reflect the evolving needs of society and the dental profession. In the coming years the curriculum will evolve further to improve the capacity of our graduates to better serve under-privileged groups in our society and to become leaders in oral health-related research and academics, organized dentistry, dental practice and government, all with a view to addressing the enormous disparities in oral and general health that exist in society today.

Am I eligible to apply to the D.M.D. Program? Do you have a pre-dentistry program?

Applicants who are recognised as residents of Quebec and who are enrolled in the final year of the Sciences profile at a Quebec CEGEP are eligible for the five-year Preparatory Program (DENT-P).

All other applicants must have received an undergraduate degree or be in the final year of a course of study at a recognized college or university in a program leading to an undergraduate degree consisting of 120 credits (or equivalent*) over eight semesters following completion of high school.

*Applicants who have received a diploma of collegial studies (CEGEP) in the province of Quebec and who do not pursue the DENT-P program, must have completed 90 credits (six semesters) in a Quebec university to obtain the required degree.

How is the D.M.D. structured?

The Faculty of Dentistry’s foundational Undergraduate Dental Program is the 4-year Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) program.

Québec CEGEP students admitted to DENT-P will first complete a preparatory year in the Faculty of Science, and then proceed into the first year of the four-year program.

For a detailed program outline, consult the Faculty of Dentistry website.
