Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (MD, CM)
What's special about a McGill M.D., C.M.?
Founded in 1829, the McGill Faculty of Medicine was the first faculty established at the University and the first medical faculty in Canada. Today, McGill is the leading medical research university nationally, and is renowned for its excellence in the health sciences worldwide.
The Faculty is home to a unique and stellar community of professors, practitioners, researchers, students and support staff. It is a burgeoning hub of interdisciplinary collaboration for the training not only of doctors, but also nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, as well as scientists who are defining new paradigms for health and well-being in this century.
Am I eligible to apply to the M.D.,C.M. Program? Do you have a pre-med program?
Applicants who are recognised as residents of Quebec and who are enrolled in the final year of an approved Quebec CEGEP program are eligible for the five-year Preparatory Program (MED-P).
All other applicants must have received or be in the final year of a 120-credit (4-year) or equivalent* Bachelor's degree from a recognised, accredited institution, in any discipline.
* Applicants who have successfully obtained a diploma of college studies (Diplôme d'études collégiales; "DEC") in a pre-university program and who do not pursue the MED-P program, may apply with a 90-credit program from a Quebec university.
How is the M.D.,C.M. structured?
The Faculty of Medicine's foundational undergraduate medical program is the 4-year Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery (M.D.,C.M.) program, fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC).
Québec CEGEP students admitted to MED-P will first complete a preparatory year in the Faculty of Science, and then proceed into the first year of the four-year program.
For a detailed program outline, consult the Faculty of Medicine website.
