Site Sponsors are typically the head of a unit e.g., Dean, Chair, Director, Senior Manager, or someone specially delegated to take on this role.
They are authorized to request Site Manager or Site Editor access on behalf of other persons to WMS sites that are under their purview. They may also request for a site to be created or deleted - these two things cannot be done without their express permission.
While they are the ultimate authority for WMS Sites, they may have to little to no interaction with the sites themselves. If they wish to have access, they must first be assigned the Site Observer role.
