TLC Lab Members at AERA Conference 2023

TLC Lab members presented their work at American Educational Research Association (AERA) Conference 2023 inperson at Chicago (April 13-16) and online (May 4-5).  Armaghan presented a poster entitled "Study of the Most Popular Learning Theories Guiding Educational Apps", a systematic analysis of the most common learning theories/ pedagogical approaches reported in recent research on learning through PreK-12 educational apps. Heather co-presented a talk with Dr. Krista Muis entitled “A Design-Based Intervention to Develop Elementary Students’ Digital Literacy Skills." which targets students’ digital literacy skills. Run presented a poster entitled "Validation of a Tripartite Math Attitudes Scale" that aims to validates a comprehensive measure of math attitudes that reflects many facets of the concept and reveals the complex relations within the construct. Gulsah will present a paper entitled “Comparing and Validating the Three-Measurement Models of Teacher Support Questionnaire in Game-Based Learning” virtually on May 4th.

TLC Lab featured in Edweek

TLC Lab's work on how teachers choose the apps they use in class was featured in a recent article in Edweek. This study was led by Armaghan Montazami, Heather Pearson, Dr. Adam Dubé, Gulsah Kacmaz, Run Wen, and Dr. Sabrina Shajeen Alam

TLC Lab Member at Quarterly Knowledge Exchange on Gamification and Gaming

TLC lab member Robin Sharma was invited to speak at Quarterly Knowledge Exchange on Gamification and Gaming organized by the United Nations Development Program on 30th March 2023. The purpose of this meeting was to create a dialogue, learn, and inspire current and future programming. Robin represented the team that designed the game DiverCity and shared his experiences at the Games for Peace Challenge.

Dr. Dubé at Bad Game Arcade Symposium 2023, Concordia University

Dr. Dube was a panelist for a discussion entitled "Where it’s Made? Educational Games in Academia and Beyond" as part of the Bad Game Arcade Symposium held in Montreal. The Bad Game Arcade is a symposium about educational games hosted by Concordia University (23-27 January 2023). Additional information about the conference can be found here

TLC lab delivers the “Playing to Learn” Workshop in collaboration with UNESCO

TLC lab members Gulsah Kacmaz and Robin Sharma designed a unique workshop for teachers and students in collaboration with the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP). Based on Gulsah’s doctoral research, the workshop focused on different types of in-class and out-of-class scaffolding supports to maximize learning using digital games in game-based learning environments. It demonstrated the utility of game-based learning to the participants and provided them with information and techniques for adopting digital games in the classroom. A total of 43 teachers and students participated in the workshop. More information about the workshop

TLC Lab Members at 2022 Annual Antiquity in Media Studies Conference

TLC Lab member Chu Xu, and Robin Sharma presented the Discovery Tour Curriculum Guides at the 2022 Annual Antiquity in Media Studies Conference on 10th December 2022. The presentation was followed by a 45-minute Q&A session with practitioners, teachers, and scholars in media studies about the creation process of the curriculum guides, TLC lab’s collaboration with Ubisoft Montreal and the state of digital game-based learning in schools. Dr. Dubé at Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit 2022

Dr. Dubé was a featured speaker at the recent Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit held in Montreal, Canada. The summit, The State of EdTech in Canada: Driving Innovation Through Evidence-based Research was a partnered event between MindShare Learning and McGill University Faculty of Education. This event brings together education stakeholders and industry leaders to learn and share alongside McGill experts, alumni, and top keynotes and panelists. TLC Lab Member selected as "Gamechanger" for 2021 Games for Peace Challenge 

Robin Sharma was selected as one of the final 22 “Gamechangers” from the Asia Pacific at the 2021 Digital Games for Peace Challenge co-organized by three agencies of the United Nations, UNESCO, UNOCT, and UNAOC. He collaborated with other participants over eight months to create innovative game ideas, with a complete curriculum guide to build skills and competencies of intercultural dialogue and social-emotional learning to prevent violent extremism. Their game concept “DiverCity” was showcased at the launch event in February 2022 to policymakers and gaming studios.

TLC Lab Member Interviewed by VoicED Radio Canada

Sabrina Alam was interviewed by the Voiced Radio Canada where she talked about her PhD research study. She suggested that there should be an optimum integration between formal and informal learning contexts for better instructional plan.

TLC Lab Collaboration with Ubisoft Discovery Tour Game

Since January 2021, Chu Xu and Robin Sharma, under the direction of Adam Dubé, have collaborated with Ubisoft’s Discovery Tour game development and web development teams to create curriculum guides for Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and Viking Age. The curriculum guides will facilitate the adoption of video games for educators by giving suggestions on how to use the games to teach a range of topics, from math to 21st century skills.

The team are already making the news

And! They were featured in Ubisoft’s recent press release celebrating 15 years of Assassin’s Creed.

A mixed-methods research project is also being conducted to collect empirical data about the effectiveness of the curriculum guides in facilitating teachers’ acceptance and knowledge of adopting games into classrooms.

Dr. Adam Dubé and Professor Sam Bruzzese of McGill Education's Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology held a webinar about how to best take advantage of available educational technology to learn during COVID-19 for students of all ages.

2020 Games For Change Virtual Festival 

At the virtual Games For Change Festival 2020, Robin co-presented design examples for developing digital curriculum around commercial-off-the-shelf games for building Social-Emotional Skills. The session titled ‘Gamestorming Curricula’ also discussed results of a pilot study done to test the effectiveness of the online course titled “Bury My, My Love: Identity in Crisis” developed by UNESCO MGIEP. The course intends to cultivate the skills of ‘empathy’ and ‘compassion’ in addition to building knowledge of learners in the domain of ‘global citizenship’. Learning from home: How to record a presentation using zoom

In response to COVID-19, conferences and classes are moved to online. If you have no idea how to present your work virtually, please check out this video. Dr. Dubé has made a guide outlining how you can record your own presentations from home using Zoom (for free). This is an easy process that allows you to have both your slides and a video of your face in the presentation. The resulting file can then be uploaded to mycourses or emailed to conferences to share with others.

Congratulations for Dr. Adam Dubé being selected to receive the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Society for Research on Child Development (SRCD) Early Career Research Fellowship in Middle Childhood Education and Development!! This ward is to recognize a scholar who has conducted a distinguished program of cumulative educational research in middle childhood education and development within the first decade following receipt of their doctoral degree.

 

Nominated for American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2019 Best Paper Award

The TLC lab paper “Mathematics apps in the App Store: Low transparency impedes educator’s ability to find quality apps” was accepted for presentation in an AERA Technology as an Agent of Change in Teaching and Learning (TACTL) SIG session for the 2019 AERA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada. As one of the top 10 submissions this year based on the TACTL SIG Review Panel, the paper was also nominated for the Best Paper Award. Check here for the preprint.

 

Effective Parenting 2018 (Public lecture series )

This public lecture series focused on topics of concern for parents/guardians/grandparents in our fast-paced world and digital age. On April 17th, Dr. Adam Dubé presented the topic on "Helping your child navigate and learn online in a time of Facebook and fake news".
