This week, we would like to spotlight Dr. Laurence J Kirmayer, a James McGill Professor and the Director of the Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry. He is also editor-in-chief of Transcultural Psychiatry (the official journal of the Section on Transcultural Psychiatry of the World Psychiatric Association), which was founded at McGill and celebrated its 50th volume on October 25, 2013.
Dr. Gabriella Gobbi’s recent revolutionary research, “Father Absence in the Monogamous California Mouse Impairs Social Behavior and Modifies Dopamine and Glutamate Synapses in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex” (Cerebral CORTEX, Oxford Journals) highlighting the importance of fathers in both neurobiology and behavior of offspring has been featured by numerous media outlets.

In this week’s Spotlight, we would like to highlight Dr. Simon Young who will be setting his sights on a well-deserved retirement as Emeritus Professor after 42 years with the McGill Department of Psychiatry.
Dr. Young began his productive McGill career in 1971 as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. He was appointed an Assistant Professor in 1975 and Full Professor in 1987. He has made exceptional contributions to research, teaching and administration, authoring approximately 230 referred papers and over 50 editorials and comments.
Mimi Israël, MD, and Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD received a 2013 “Coup de chapeau verdunois” for their commitment as first-line psychiatrists. The awards were handed out by Roger Cadieux, President of the Forum économique de Verdun, during a recognition ceremony on the evening of November 27.
This award recognizes the involvement of Verdun residents and employees.
Salah El Mestikawy, PhD, a researcher at The Douglas Institute, along with his research team, have received $1.5 million to explore the dual signalling capacity of neurons. This research grant is one of five new Multi-Investigator Research Initiative (MIRI) grants awarded by Brain Canada with funds from the Canada Brain Research Fund and Partners. The Douglas team will work with colleagues at the University of Western Ontario.
In this week’s Spotlight, we would like to welcome Dr. Rimma Orenman as a new member of our department.
Dr. Orenman has been appointed as a full-time faculty lecturer who will be joining the DMHUI Great North Mental Health Program, serving the mental health needs of the Nunavik population through the Réseau Universitaire Intégré en Sante (RUIS McGill) program. Dr. Orenman completed her residency at McGill and has a background in anthropology. She has had a longstanding interest in working in the Quebec north.

Dr. Casacalenda is an Associate Professor in the McGill Department of Psychiatry. As Training Director and Clinical Supervisor at the Jewish General Hospital, Dr. Casacalenda is actively involved in the training of psychiatry and family medicine residents. He has recently chaired the McGill Department of Psychiatry Curriculum Review Committee, Collaborative Mental Health Task Force, and Family Skills Training Task Force. He is also former vice-chair of the Psychiatry Examination Board of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr.
