This grant is open to faculty and undergraduate students with the aim of maximizing course-based experiential learning (EL) opportunities. Instructors are invited to apply if they require financial assistance to facilitate an EL activity in their course. Students, under the supervision of a faculty member, may also apply for funding to complete or continue an EL project originating in a course.

Evaluation Criteria

Projects and activities will be evaluated based on applicant responses to questions in the webform, with particular emphasis on feasibility and impact. The Lewtas Office of Experiential Learning will oversee the adjudication process in collaboration with the Faculty's Experiential Learning Committee.

Undergraduate students can apply for up to $2000 to complete or continue an EL project originating in a course.

Criteria

• The applicants must identify a faculty supervisor to provide mentorship and support
• The project must have originated in a course
• The applicants must be enrolled as Desautels students when they apply for the grant and when it is used
• The project must have an articulated plan for success
• When applicable, we ask that students include a letter of support from their partner organization(s)

Eligible projects

The examples listed below are not an exhaustive list. Students are encouraged to contact el.mgmt [at] mcgill.ca if they wish to inquire about eligible projects.

• Complete or continue a course project in partnership with an external organization:
  • Example: Students were asked to formulate recommendations for a non-profit or community partner. They apply for funding so that their recommendations can be implemented.
  • Example: Students designed a business application for a community partner and apply for funding to support the creation of an MVP/prototype.
• Continue the development of a personal venture that was ideated, designed, or created as part of a course project.
  • Example: Students designed a venture as part of a course project. They apply for funding to further develop the venture with a specific goal in mind (e.g., a business plan submission to Dobson’s Lean Startup program).
• Not eligible: Research projects, independent studies, internships, case competitions, projects requesting ongoing operating expenses

Faculty members can apply for up to $1000 to cover expenses related to an EL activity within a course. Priority will be given to activities that can be run repeatedly without additional costs.

Criteria

• The activity must be associated with a for-credit Desautels course
• The activity is hands-on, realistic, and develops skills that students may use after graduation
• All students enrolled in the course must be offered the opportunity to participate in the activity
• The activity has defined learning outcomes, opportunities for reflection, and (if applicable) relevant assessment methods
