Dr. Joseph S. Schwartz is an Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgeon with subspecialty expertise in Rhinology (Diseases of the nose and sinuses) and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at McGill University. He completed his medical school training at l’Université Laval in Quebec City in 2010. He then underwent 5 years of surgical training in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at McGill University while simultaneously working towards a Masters degree in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. The focus of Dr. Schwartz’s Masters research comprised the immunomodulating properties of commensal and athogenic bacteria in Chronic Rhinosinusitis. Following completion of his surgical residency training, Dr. Schwartz completed a prestigious fellowship in Rhinology & Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution responsible for pioneering the subspecialty under the tutelage of Dr. David W. Kennedy. Renowned for producing leaders in the field under the mentorship of Drs. Noam A Cohen, Nithin D. Adappa, James N. Palmer, Bert W. O’Malley and David W. Kennedy, Dr. Schwartz acquired cutting edge surgical expertise in complex frontal and revision sinus surgery, sinonasal and skull base tumors, CSF leaks and encephaloceles. Dr. Schwartz also acquired expertise in the resection of pediatric skull base tumors at the world renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the highest volume centers worldwide to offer this minimally invasive approach in pediatric patients.
Dr. Schwartz recognizes that the future of our specialty firmly rests in our commitment to further our understanding of diseases of the Head & Neck through leading edge research. As such, Dr. Schwartz has dedicated and continues to dedicate a substantial portion of his time to producing translational and innovative research that seeks to optimize the management of disease processes afflicting his patients. Despite a relatively early career in clinical and basic science research, Dr. Schwartz has contributed over 35 peer reviewed scientific journal articles and conference presentations, multiple invited book chapters and approximately $100,000 in peer-reviewed research grant funding.
