Betty Workman Yaffe Prize in Yiddish Studies

Established in 1990 by Dr. L. Yaffe and friends in honour of Betty Workman Yaffe. Awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies to the student, undergraduate or graduate, making the greatest progress in the study of Yiddish. (Value: 1 award of $1300)

Blacher and Glasrot Families Memorial Award for Holocaust Research

Established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Josef Glasrot, survivors of the Holocaust and residents of Montreal. An award of $1000 to be presented annually to a student at Mcgill University for excellence in research in Holocaust and related studies, and particularly on the history of the ghettos of Warsaw and Kovno (Kaunas). The award will be made on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies, and presented at an annual public ceremony during the Closing Exercises of the Department of Jewish Studies. C.A. Brodie Brockwell Prize

Established in 1981 by Dr. and Mrs. Hirsh Rosenfeld. Awarded to an outstanding Major or Honours student entering the final year of Jewish Studies. Awarded on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $500)

Chaim Maizel Memorial Scholarship in Hebrew Studies

Established in 2000 by Senator Leo B.A. (1949) B.C.L. (1952) and Sandra Maizel Kolber, C.M., B.A. (1955). A brilliant Hebrew scholar and expert in Middle East Affairs, Chaim Maizel enriched the lives of Montrealers by serving numerous years as President of the Hebrew Cultural Organization. He co-founded Camp Massad, where Jewish youth who were students of Hebrew could live their daily lives in Hebrew each summer, thus giving them practical knowledge of the working language and a love of their heritage. Two Chaim Maizel scholarships will be awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students for academic excellence in the study of Hebrew language and/or Literature. These scholarships will be awarded by the Faculty of Arts Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: $8000)

Dora Wasserman Prize for Excellence in Jewish Studies

Established in 1995 by the members and friends of the Yiddish Theatre of the Saidye Bronfman Centre. To be awarded as an annual prize to a deserving student for excellence in Yiddish literature or modern Jewish history. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $350)

Dr. and Mrs. Hirsh Rosenfeld Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Established in 1986 to commemorate an act of kindness by Sir Edward Beatty, then Chancellor of McGill University. Awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the Jewish Teacher Training Program to an undergraduate student in the Jewish Teacher Training Program or to a student entering the program from the B.A. Honours or Major in Jewish Studies in recognition of distinguished academic achievement. (Value: 1 award of $1500)

Dr. Oscar and Sally Schickler Scholarship for Jewish Studies

Established by the late Dr. Oskar Schickler in 2008 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal, this scholarship is a testament to the Schicklers’ lifelong commitment to creating educational opportunities to students of all ages. Awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $3000)

Fiszel (Philip) Cola Prize

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student for excellence in Yiddish or East European Jewish Studies. Awarded solely by the Department of Jewish Studies on the recommendation of the Chair. (Value: 1 award of $200)

Gisia Kiselvsky Graduate Fellowship in Jewish Studies

Established in 2013 by Joel King, BSc 1968, BCL 1971, LLB 1972 and his family, in memory of his grandmother Gisia Kiselvsky to support one or more outstanding graduate students in the Department of Jewish Studies in the Faculty of Arts. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts, upon recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies on the basis of academic merit. (Value: $16,000)

Henriette and Marcel Korner Scholarship

Established in 2013 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate Jewish Studies student on the recommendation of the Department. (Value: 1 award of $1000)

Jack Gitlitz Memorial Scholarships

Established in 2011 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Two scholarships awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students who are residents of Quebec. Awarded for excellence in Jewish Studies on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 2 awards of $5000)

Jack Schoel Scholarships

Two scholarships awarded annually for academic excellence to either incoming or continuing students in the Jewish Teacher Training Program. Awarded by the Faculty of Education Committee on Student Standing on the recommendation of the Director of the Program. (Value: $12,000)

Louis and Bessie Batist Prize

To be awarded to an undergraduate student showing excellence in the area of Jewish Studies. The amount of this prize will be equal to the yearly income produced by the perpetuating fund established by the Batist family. Awarded on recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $600)

Max and Jennie Schwartz Award in Jewish Studies

Established in 2000 by Dr. Bernard J. Shapiro, BA, LLD and Dr. Phyllis Shapiro, DipEd in memory of Max and Jennie Schwartz. The award will be provided to an outstanding student pursuing an academic program in Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $500)

Micki and Norman Keesal Scholarship

Established in 2011 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. One scholarship awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Jewish Studies at McGill University. Awarded based on need and merit upon the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $1000)

Nettie Zuckerman Vininsky Gordon Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Established in 2011 through a bequest from Nettie Zuckerman Vininsky Gordon. Scholarships for outstanding students enrolled in the Department of Jewish Studies. Open to undergraduate or graduate students. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts upon recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $2500)

Norman Berman Memorial Prize

Established in 1973 by Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Berman. An annual prize or prizes will be awarded to students for: 1) Excellence in the field of Judaic Studies. 2) A critical study in the field of Hebrew or Yiddish language and literature or a translation of an important work of Hebrew or Yiddish literature into English or French. Awarded on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: $900)

Polly and David Binder Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Founded in 1985 by family and friends in honour of Polly and in memory of her late husband David Binder. Awarded annually for high academic standing to a graduate or undergraduate student pursuing a Jewish Studies program. Awarded on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $2500)

Rosa and David z"l Finestone Scholarship

Established in 2014 and administered by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Awarded annually to a student excelling in the study of the Hebrew language. (Value: 1 award of $250)

Rose and Harry Rothman Memorial Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Endowed in 2000 by Kay Rothman Wolofsky, Dip.P and OT (1953), and Howard S. Rothman, B. Eng. (1958) in memory of their late parents, Rose and Harry Rothman, who were committed to perpetuating Jewish heritage through education. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts upon recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies to an outstanding undergraduate student who has completed at least one year of study. Preference will be given to a student with a particular interest in contemporary Jewish issues. (Value: 1 award of $2000)

Sadie Polatshek Memorial Award in Jewish Studies

Established in 2002 in honour and in memory of Mrs. Sadie Polatshek by members of her family. Awarded annually to an outstanding student who is pursuing an academic program in the Department of Jewish Studies. There will be special preference for a student planning a career in Jewish Education. Administered by the Montreal Jewish Community Foundation, the Sadie Polatshek Memorial Award will be conferred, beginning in June 2003, upon the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies in consultation with the Scholarships Committee of the Department of Jewish Studies. Sara Rosenfeld Prize in Yiddish

Established in 1990 by the members of the Mame-loshn in honour of Sara Rosenfeld who devotes herself to the perpetuation of Yiddish language and culture. The prize is offered for excellence in Yiddish language and/or literature to a student in the Department of Jewish Studies. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Department. (Value: 1 award of $400)

Sarah and Joseph Lazarus Graduate Prize in Jewish Studies

Awarded by the Department of Jewish Studies, Faculty of Arts, to a graduate student in a program of the Department on the basis of academic merit. (Value: 1 award of $1000)

Sheila Becker Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Established in 2007 by the Becker family and friends in memory of Sheila Becker, B.A. 1961. An active researcher on the Holocaust, Sheila was known for her strong interest in Jewish culture. Awarded by the Faculty of Arts Scholarships Committee on the recommendation of the Jewish Studies Department to an outstanding student who has completed at least one year of an undergraduate degree program of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $4500)

Shloime Wiseman Memorial Book Prize

Established in 1986 through a bequest from the estate of Mr. Shloime Wiseman, one of the Montreal Jewish Community's most distinguished educators and scholars. A book prize will be awarded annually to an outstanding student, either graduate or undergraduate, on the recommendation of the Department of Jewish Studies. (Value: 1 award of $100)
