Biographie

[traduction à venir] Alicia Hinarejos is Full Professor at McGill University's Faculty of Law. Before joining McGill in 2021, she was a Reader (Professor) in European Union Law and Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge. She had previously been a Boulton Fellow and Assistant Professor at McGill University, a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow (Faculty of Law, University of Oxford) and a William Golding Junior Research Fellow (Brasenose College and Institute of European and Comparative Law, Oxford).

Professor Hinarejos’s main areas of research are EU law and comparative public law. In recent years, her work has focused on the evolution of the EU’s Economic and Monetary Union and its consequences for the EU’s constitutional order.

To date, her work has appeared in top-tier journals in the field, including the Common Market Law Review, the European Law Review, the European Law Journal, and the Yearbook of European Law. Her first monograph, entitled Judicial Control in the EU. Reforming Jurisdiction in the Intergovernmental Pillars, was published with Oxford University Press (OUP) in December 2009. Her second monograph, The Euro Area Crisis in Constitutional Perspective, appeared with OUP in May 2015. She is currently co-editing (with Robert Schütze) a volume on Fiscal Federalism in the European Union, to be published by OUP in 2021.

Her research has attracted funding and awards from a variety of institutions, such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy (most recently in the form of a Rising Star Engagement Award), the European Central Bank (Senior Legal Research Scholarship), and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Senior Fellowship).

A recognised expert in her field, Professor Hinarejos is regularly invited to speak and lecture at national and international institutions and conferences, has provided oral evidence to the UK Parliament (House of Lords), and has advised UK government officials as well as EU institutions in her areas of expertise. Her work on Economic and Monetary Union has been cited in the most significant judicial decisions in this area in recent years, both by the Court of Justice of the European Union (on several occasions), and by the German Federal Constitutional Court. She is Joint Editor of the European Law Review.
