NECMT Annual Meeting hosted by McGill University this month
This month McGill University is hosting the 34th Annual Meeting of the New England Conference of Music Theorists (NECMT) – the first time the event has ever been held in Montreal. NECMT’s main purpose is to foster the development of music theory, and provide a forum for exchanging ideas between music theorists.
World Hearing Day at the McGill Schulich School of Music: Presentation of the Hearing-Care Platform
On the occasion of World Hearing Day (WHD) on March 3, the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), presents the Hearing-Care Platform: A practical and accessible set of tools for the self-assessment of noise exposure, which are particularly aimed at young musicians and youths in general.
Nick Squire wins Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Classical

Andrew Crust named Assistant Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
Congratulations to Andrew Crust (MMus 2012), who was recently appointed as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's Assistant Conductor! Beginning in September 2019, Andrew will conduct a large variety of programming with the VSO, including subscription concerts, concerts for children, Pops, and more.

Memorial Tribute for Dr. Daryl Robert Gibson
In honour of his passing on October 31, 2018, the family is planning a remembrance on February 17, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. (Evensong service) at Christ Church Cathedral (635 Saint-Catherine St. W.). At the request of the family, donations may be made in his name to St. Mary’s Hospital Cancer Care Fund.

Richard Stoelzel: new Interim Music Director of the Lakeshore Concert Band
Professor Richard Stoelzel has been appointed as the new Interim Music Director of the Lakeshore Concert Band! In a recent email exchange, Prof. Stoelzel writes, "I have had the pleasure of conducting the LCB as a guest conductor in numerous rehearsals and in concert. I am now thrilled to be appointed their interim music director.

Alexander Freund: Never Stop Learning
As doctoral trumpet student Alexander Freund (D.Mus, year 3) puts it, an essential part of being an artist is the “never-ending search for growth.” In Freund’s case, this search led him to a long association with the M5 Mexican Brass and a teaching position for 11 years at the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia, Michoacán. In the past few years however, he moved to Montreal to study at Schulich under Prof.

Allyson Rogers on Eldon Rathburn's "amazing versatility" and more
Despite being one of Canada’s most prolific composers in the twentieth century, Eldon Rathburn (LMus 1937) still remains somewhat unknown. Over the course of his 75-year musical career, Rathburn churned out hundreds of remarkable film scores that provided the soundtrack for a wide variety of productions, in addition to many orchestral and chamber pieces. With such an extensive catalogue of noteworthy works, Rathburn certainly deserves a prominent place in the Canadian musical canon.
