Explore McGill's Foundation Year Program Pilot

All U0 Bachelor of Arts students must complete the Foundation Year Program as part of their degree requirements. As an incoming student, you will not initially declare or apply for an academic program but will be enrolled automatically in the General Option by which you will complete the Foundation Year Program. For the 2024/25 academic year, we are offering an additional pathway by which you can complete the Foundation Year Program - you can learn more about, including how to register for it, below.

General Option

The General Option is designed to ensure that students gain a broad grounding in the liberal arts which will set them up for the rest of their studies in the Faculty of Arts. In the General Option, students are required to take 18 credits of core requirements in three of the following four categories: Humanities; Social Sciences; Languages; and/ or Maths and Sciences. Students select individual courses from an approved list.

Introducing FYPP

The newly designed Foundation Year Program Pilot (FYPP) offers an alternative path by which a limited number of newly-admitted U0 students (ie. admitted from High School) may complete the Foundation Year Program. The Pilot has a different structure to the General Option, but the content is of equal weight, challenge, and complexity.

What’s different about the FYPP?

The newly-designed Foundation Year Program Pilot:

  • provides students with a slightly more structured pathway through their first year;
  • offers courses designed uniquely for first year students;
  • places emphasis on establishing a community of inquiry as a cohort, with opportunities to meet and collaborate with peers across FYPP classes – particularly in the small (25 student) seminars; and
  • maintains a level of flexibility similar to the General Option, allowing students to select up to three courses of their choice per term from an approved list.

Is the FYPP right for you?
