In addition, you will also learn how to start the job search and what makes a successful application.

CAREER PANEL

Members of the career panel will present a snap shot of their career paths to the attendees. This will include the career path for Dr. Kevin Petrecca who completed both a PhD and an MD, Dr. Ian Bates who followed an academic research track with a PhD and postdoctoral fellow position with Dr. Hanrahan followed by a position as a Cellular Imaging Specialist with Carl Zeiss Canada. Dr. Ana Palijan completed her PhD with Dr. White and is now a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Finally, Dr. Linda Cooper will tell us about her career path and how it lead her to become a traineer in scientific writing for researchers at all career levels. Following the career overviews the panel will be open for a question and answer session. Find out how key career decisions were made, how panelist got their foot in the door, and the struggles they may have encountered along the way.

EARLY CAREER PANEL

Members of this panel will tell us about how to get into graduate school, how to choose a research lab, a Master’s degree or a PhD? Kimberley Young is finishing up her Master’s degree with Dr. Haghighi and is currently looking into doctorate programs in neurosciences followed by a career in academia or industry. Raminder Gill is finishing up her PhD with Dr. McKinney (McGill Pharmacology) and has been hired as a consultant at the Montreal office of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) starting in the summer of 2015. She will talk about how she was able to land that position. Finally, Yoann Gosselin did his BEng and then did an industrial Master’s degree with a local Montreal camera company - Nüvü Caméras Inc. Following his Master’s degree he was hired on as an Applications Engineer with the same company. Get some tips from this panel on what to do now to start down the career path or your choice.

Patricia D`Itri will close out the evening with a presentation of tips and ideas about how to make the most of a job search with a focus on writing an effective cover letter and resume.
