HPV testing

What do we know about the HPV test?

The HPV test is a simple and reliable test to detect HPV infection in the cervix. This test is performed in much the same manner as the Pap test: a swab is brushed against the cervix. The sample is then sent to the lab, where it is tested for the presence of high-risk HPVs. This test is read by a machine and has the potential to be cheaper than a Pap smear.  Also, this test can sometimes detect HPV infections before cell abnormalities are evident.

CCCaST is the first North American randomized controlled trial of Pap vs HPV testing that confirms increased sensibility of HPV testing to detect high grade lesion.
