Planning with Purpose: myPath and the Individual Development Plan unravelled (In partnership with Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies - GPS)

Goal setting is an important predictor of wellbeing and success in graduate school. The IDP (Individual Development Plan) is a tool designed to help you articulate and plan your goals. Think of your IDP as a tailored roadmap that guides you from where you are now to where you want to be. The purpose of an IDP is not to "lock" you into a set of goals, but rather to help you approach your work and life with more intention, and to adapt your plan when new challenges and opportunities arise. McGill Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies developed myPath specifically to help you create an IDP. In this 1 hour session, we will discuss what is involved in creating an Individual Development Plan (IDP) and how you can use the myPath tools and programs to create a meaningful IDP that will help you to stay focused on your priorities and track your progress.

Learning objectives:

In this workshop you will learn:

what an Individual Development Plan
the basic steps of goal planning (identifying and selecting meaningful goals)
how myPath can help you

Join us for a workshop sharing strategies for translating your record of academic achievement into a new document – a resume - designed for non-academic job applications.

Identify transferrable skills and learn how to articulate them as relevant experience in the context of a non-academic job application

Networking for Introverts and others Who Hate Networking

Designed by and with introverts in mind, this workshop will explore the many ways to build your network without saying a word If you have ever wondered how you will promote yourself, keep a conversation going or follow up on one, this workshop is for you!

This workshop will identify and explore key components of effective in-person communication throughout the job search process. As a result of attending this workshop, students will be able to:

Approach networking with less anxiety.
Have ideas on how to reach out to people effectively.
Be aware of the impact of non-verbal communication.
Understand that most jobs are found through the hidden job market and that networking is a win-win situation.

Industry Insider: Canadian Workplace Culture edition

Matt Adolphe, an international communication expert, will share some unwritten rules of the Canadian workplace and address:
• why certain behaviours don’t work in the Canadian workplace
• what your boss really means by “can you do me a favor?”
• why it’s not all about work at work, and
• how building relationships can lead to a promotion

SPEAKER:
Matt Adolphe, B.A., M.A.
Matt Adolphe teaches writing and communication courses at various post-secondary institutes, including the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and SAIT. At SAIT, he teaches a variety of leadership and professional communication courses online. He holds a B.A. in Indigenous Studies and History form Laurentian University, and an M.A. in Communication Management from the University of South Australia. Beyond teaching, his professional life has been punctuated with experiences as a political organizer, volunteer, career coach, consultant, actor, radio DJ, studio musician, speech writer, and media presenter (the first English speaking TV news presenter in Macao). Moreover, he is the author of two books: "Canadian Workplace Culture: Mastering the Unspoken Rules" and "Would You Hire You?" Both books are aimed at helping people achieve success in their careers.

SPEAKERS:

Jonathan Caballero – Business Development Specialist at Mitacs. PhD in psychology by UNAM, and recently completed postdoctoral research in communication sciences and disorders at McGill University, has extensive experience in multidisciplinary research projects in academic and governmental organizations. He is the main contact for McGill University, in charge of the Faculty of Engineering and all departments within the Social Sciences and Humanities.

Noha Gerges – Business Development Director and Team Lead, QC at Mitacs. PhD in Cancer Genetics from McGill University with extensive experience in management and business development in various disciplines. She is the main contact for the Faculties of Science and Medicine at McGill University.

Ralph Chery – Business Development Director at Mitacs. Trained as an electrical engineer, he is a McGill University Graduate in Business & Finance, and completed an MBA from IESE Business School in Barcelona. He has extensive experience in business development in the fields of finance, energy, and other disciplines. He is the main contact for Desautels and Dobson.

Career Pathways of PhDs Grads : The Stats and the Stories

What careers do PhD graduates pursue after graduation? How do they transition to a career in and outside academia? What advice do PhD alumni have for current graduate students? This session will present the results of the TRaCE McGill project, which tracked over 4,500 PhD grads from 2008 to 2018 and also interviewed over 300 of them. Come find out the career outcomes of graduates from your faculty and hear the stories of PhD alumni who successfully transitioned to exciting jobs.

SPEAKER :

Marie-Claude Felton, Acadmeic Affairs Officer, McGill

Bio:

Dr. Marie-Claude Felton is Academic Affairs Officer at McGill Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, where she manages the TRaCE McGill project which investigates the career outcomes of nearly 5,000 McGill PhD alumni. She also worked as project manager for the department of English and as Affiliate member of the History department. After finishing her PhD at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, a Banting postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University as well as a research fellowship at Oxford University. She’s the author of several works pertaining to the history of authorship and copyright in the 18^thcentury.
