The Faculty of Law and the Institute of Air & Space Law (IASL) are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Brian F. Havel as Director of the IASL.

Brian Havel is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, where he currently directs the International & Comparative Law Program and the International Aviation Law Institute.

Professor Havel, who teaches international aviation law, international trade law and the law of the European Union, practiced transnational corporate and antitrust litigation at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP before entering academia. His current research focuses on issues of public/private governance in the air transport and space industries – and the sites of that governance – that emerge from “messy” public and private international norm-generation at all levels.

Professor Havel’s publications have an interdisciplinary focus and include Principles and Practice of International Aviation Law (Cambridge 2014, with G. Sanchez) and Beyond Open Skies: A New Regime for International Aviation (Kluwer 2009), as well as a number of law review studies. Havel is editor in chief of the DePaul College of Law’s Issues in Aviation Law & Policy and is a member of the editorial board of Kluwer’s Air and Space Law and of the IASL’s own Annals of Air and Space Law. Brian Havel also was the Fulbright Visiting Professor of Comparative Law and Legal Pluralism at McGill’s Faculty of Law in 2007-2008.

Professor Havel has addressed air transport conferences and symposia around the world.  He is Vice-Chair of the External Advisory Board of the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University, and has served on the board of the European Air Law Association since 2005.

“The IASL recently celebrated 65 years of activity and has earned a world-wide reputation in the field,” Dean Robert Leckey said. “I am confident that Professor Havel brings the talent, energy, and vision to steer its continued flourishing.”

Professor Havel will join McGill’s Faculty of Law on August 1, 2017.
