Lindsay Holmgren, Associate Professor of Strategy & Organization, awarded 2021 SSHRC Insight Grant

“Confronting Finitude: Socioeconomic Implications of COVID-19 and Climate Change on University Students and Recent Graduates in Canada”

Professor Holmgren's research is grounded in two assumptions: (1) anxiety is an economic driver and (2) it ought not to be. The project takes a narratological approach to assessing how major contemporary phenomena that relate to human finitude—especially COVID-19 and Climate Change—impact the economic lives of university students and recent graduates. Involving five major research institutions in Canada, the project will assess how students’ and recent graduates’ professional and consumption-related choices are affected by these phenomena over a 5- to 10-year period. The goals of the project are to:

(1) better understand how contemporary Western ideology, products, and services exacerbate anxieties relating to time and finitude and contribute to the increase of anxiety-as-disability.

(2) propose policies that address the deleterious effects of products and services that induce and then capitalize on anxieties relating to finitude.
