Innovation that Creates Access to Financing for Rural Smallholders in Developing Countries
Financial inclusion of rural small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is central to achieving Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, increase food security, and achieve equity. Worldwide, more than 475 million smallholders have an important role in food and agricultural production. The factors and processes that enable SME access to finance and sustainable markets are not well understood. This research project examines financing innovations that meet the demand of rural SMEs in Latin America and Africa to promote sustainable businesses. It aims to produce knowledge that can inform efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate poverty and promote responsible production in global value chains.
