GSDE Symposium 2020 "Education in an Age of Resistance" will feature McGill Education's Dr. Aziz Choudry as one of its keynote speakers.  Dr. Choudry will be opening the conference by talking about the struggles across the world in fighting for accessible public higher education, going beyond serving the interests of elites. Early Childhood Symposium 2020 (February 11 & 12, 2020) will feature two McGill Education speakers: Dr. Sheryl Smith-Gilman will give the Opening Plenary as Keynote Speaker and Dr. Tina Montreuil will lead the workshop "Healthy Minds, Healthy Schools & Resilience Building in Children: Preliminary Outcomes". Emmanuella Lambropoulos, newly re-elected Federal MP for the Saint-Laurent riding is one of 98 women elected to the House of Commons this past fall and one of the youngest of these female Members of Parliament. A McGill Education alumna (B.Ed. '13), Lambropoulos is complementing her political career by completing her Master's in Educational Leadership within the Faculty's Department of Integrated Studies in Education. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed January 24 as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

Course Lecturer for McGill's Department of Integrated Studies, Dr. Sabrina Jafralie, gave her take on the proposed educational reform that would remove the religious culture component from the provincial school curriculum, in favour of other ethics course content exploring 21st Century themes. Dr. Jafralie, who also is a Head Teacher at Westmount High School, told CT News that removing religious culture would be a mistake as "we want our students to understand each other and what makes us click".

Maria Ezcurra, founder of the McGill Art Hive Initiative and Art Instructor, was presented Wednesday with the Visual Arts Diversity Award for 2019 by the Conseil des arts de Montréal. The award recognizes originality and diversity in the Montreal visual arts scene. The Department of Integrated Studies in Education's Dr. Allison Gonsalves was asked to speak at McGill's December 6th event honouring the memory of the victims of the Polytechnique Massacre; the 30th anniversary of the tragedy and the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On November 6, 2019, McGill Education's Dr. Claudia Mitchell was honoured by the Government of Quebec, having been awarded the Prix du Quebec, specifically the Léon-Gérin Prize, for her exemplary research career in the humanities and social sciences. A Distinguished James McGill Professor, Dr. Mitchell is the Director of the Institute for Human Development and Well-Being, Founder of the Participatory Cultures Lab, and a faculty member of McGill's Department of Integrated Studies in Education.
