In response to COVID-19, HathiTrust Digital Library has made over two million books from McGill University Library’s print collection available online for all McGill students, faculty, and staff. The Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) includes in-copyright material. The new service provides remote access to over half of McGill’s print collection.

Due to the McGill VPN being currently unavailable as a method to access Library e-resources, users can access PressReader through a web browser. A workaround is available to authenticate the PressReader mobile app via EZproxy with the creation of a personal PressReader account.

McGill Library has put together a list of these publishers and their ‘open’ or freely available resources on a dedicated webpage. The Library is offering a one-time retrieval service for research print materials from all downtown libraries to members of the McGill community. Only items that can normally circulate will be retrieved.

To support McGill’s closure, the campus is making some technical changes to the VPN to allow it to scale up for a larger number of users. A side effect of these changes is that most electronic resources will not be accessible via the VPN for the time being.
