Students of trumpet Professor Richard Stoelzel and Paul Merkelo have excelled at the International Trumpet Guild Competitions and will advance to the final competition round later this spring. Francis LaPorte, student of Richard Stoelzel, and David Koch, student of Paul Merkelo, have been named finalists in the International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Competition. Benjamin Hare, student of Richard Stoelzel, is the first alternate for the Solo Competition Finals.

It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney’s Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation’s great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class — and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.

Le voilà, le concert, qui m’a « purgé » de l’état d’hébétude dans lequel m’avait entraîné le récital d’András Schiff, vendredi dernier. C’est dire qu’il a surpassé de très loin le récital de la veille, du réputé Yefim Bronfman.

The Schulich School of Music is delighted to announce that violinist Violaine Melançon has been named Visiting Professor for the 2017-2018 season.
An artist deeply dedicated to the range of violin and chamber music repertoire, violinist Violaine Melançon serves on the violin and chamber music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory (www.peabody.jhu.edu), and is Visiting Professor at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.

In just a few short days, Montreal opera fans are going to get everything they could ever wish for. As part of Montréal en Lumière, Schulich’s Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival is set to present the Opera Binge Festival, which will cram a total of seven operas into the space of 24 hours.

Harpist Antoine Malette-Chénier, a Doctor of Musical Arts student of Jennifer Swartz, has won the McGill Concerto Competition. In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21, Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. He will perform with the McGill Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

The Concours d'Art lyrique de la Relève Musicale was held on February 17, 18 and 19 in Québec City. Three current students were awarded prizes: tenor Jeremy Scinocca, BMus'19 received 1st Prize, tenor Graeme Linton, B.Mus'19 and bass-baritone Reed Copeland, BMus'17 each received 3rd Prize. In addition baritone Igor Mostovoi, MMus'17 was engaged by the Opéra national du Rhin, Strasbourg, France for their Young Artists Program for the 2017-2018 season.

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera McGill, the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lefèvre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier.

Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor Andris Nelsons.

This year, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) marks its 50th anniversary and Schulich students will be playing a major part in the celebrations. Notably, the McGill Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau’s Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ’s Montréal/New Musiques Festival 2017.

There’s already plenty to celebrate during Montreal’s 375th anniversary year, and now there’s yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world’s number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
Montreal jumped from last year’s seventh place to overtake reigning champ Paris, now the world’s second-place student city after four years in the top spot.
