Eating disorders among Quebecers skyrocket during pandemic

...Since the COVID-19 crisis began in March 2020, referrals to an eating disorders program at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute increased by 45 per cent. “It’s really quite striking. That figure resembles what I have heard from colleagues all over the world,” said Dr. Howard Steiger, who runs the program.

Brownstein: Pandemic brings more challenges to Douglas Hospital

...Dr. Johan Cohen, a psychiatrist and head of the emergency room at the Douglas, has nothing but praise for the efforts of his fellow staffers.

“These are such difficult times for the patients and staff,” Cohen says. “At the beginning, we had no vaccines and we really had to come together to deal with it all. And then came the short staffing issues. Let’s just say we really had to learn to adapt quickly to ever-changing circumstances.”

The Mental Health Troubles of Middle-Aged Men

(By Rob Whitley) There are many psychiatric subspecialties focused on specific age categories. These includechild psychiatry, youth mental health, and geriatric psychiatry. But there is no subspecialty known as "mid-life mental health" or "middle-aged psychiatry." This is concerning, as statistics indicate that this can be an especially vulnerable period. For example, suicides in Western countries are particularly pronounced in the 40-60 age group, with especially high rates in middle-aged men.

International Group Releases New OCD Treatment Standards

....OCD is a prevalent disorder that is a leading cause of medical disability worldwide, said Debbie Sookman, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at McGill University, specialist at the McGill University Health Center in Montreal, and chair of the OCD ATF. With specialized treatment, many patients with OCD can achieve a positive and sustained response, she said, but there are too few qualified professionals to meet global demand.
