As always, Schulich faculty, alumni, and students are heavily involved in the Festival international de Jazz de Montréal. From June 26 to July 6, 2019, take in some music at one of the festival's many sites as part of its 40th edition—the list below highlights a collection of Schulich-related acts performing this year organized by venue, several of which feature free admission.

We are pleased to invite Schulich faculty, staff, students, and alumni to submit proposals for presentations for inclusion in an LGBTQ2I+ History Month event. Scheduled for 28 September 2019 (7:00 p.m., Wirth Opera Studio), the event aims to highlight the accomplishments of LGBTQ2I+ musicians and music researchers past and present, while displaying the breadth and scope of work within the broader field of music. Presentations may take the form of a research paper, musical performance, new composition, or combination of these.

Since beginning his international career in 1974, guitarist Pat Metheny has garnered widespread critical acclaim, demonstrated astonishing versatility as an artist, and has consistently been at the forefront of music technology. On May 29, 2019, his accomplishments will be recognized by McGill University through his reception of an Honorary Doctorate of Music at the Spring Convocation.

Rachelle Jenkins (MMus ’13) published the Audition Playbook, a two-part guide and workbook for optimal planning and preparation of orchestral auditions, in May of 2018. Designed for musicians of all levels and instruments, the Audition Playbook helps readers carefully and effectively create, implement, and follow their own plans from start to finish.

This month McGill University is hosting the 34th Annual Meeting of the New England Conference of Music Theorists (NECMT) – the first time the event has ever been held in Montreal. NECMT’s main purpose is to foster the development of music theory, and provide a forum for exchanging ideas between music theorists.

On the occasion of World Hearing Day (WHD) on March 3, the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, in collaboration with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT), presents the Hearing-Care Platform: A practical and accessible set of tools for the self-assessment of noise exposure, which are particularly aimed at young musicians and youths in general.

Congratulations to Nick Squire (MMus 2008), who recently won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Classical for his work on Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 11 by Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This win brings his Grammy count up to a total of four, as he was credited as a recording engineer on album which won Grammys for Best Orchestra Performance in 2015, 2016, and 2018.

La production de Die Zauberflöte d’Opéra McGill a récemment été saluée par le journaliste Daniel Raymond dans sa critique sur le site atuvu.ca. Une grande partie des membres de la production, tant sur scène que dans les coulisses, ont été félicités pour le succès remarquable de l’opéra, en passant par le directeur artistique Patrick Hansen et la metteuse en scène Jessica Derventzis, à Vincent Lefèvre (décors), Florence Cornet (maquillages) et Ginette Grenier (costumes), qui ont tous contribué à donner vie au concept unique de steampunk de l’opéra.

Congratulations to Andrew Crust (MMus 2012), who was recently appointed as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's Assistant Conductor! Beginning in September 2019, Andrew will conduct a large variety of programming with the VSO, including subscription concerts, concerts for children, Pops, and more.

In honour of his passing on October 31, 2018, the family is planning a remembrance on February 17, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. (Evensong service) at Christ Church Cathedral (635 Saint-Catherine St. W.). At the request of the family, donations may be made in his name to St. Mary’s Hospital Cancer Care Fund.

In a review of Opera McGill's production of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), Ludwig van Montreal praised the costumes, the projections and the performances of the cast. Congratulations to all of those involved!
