McGill celebrated its bicentennial in 2021, and as the university community began looking toward the next hundred years, it launched the Third Century Challenge Fund. Created by Chancellor Emeritus Michael Meighen, it encourages others to give by matching funds. Forty-eight new scholarships and bursaries have been created since the launch of the fund in 2019, and Chafik Hamad (MBA’15) is one of the donors who took up the call.
Craig Buntin (MBA’13) represented Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, but during the lead-in to the 2010 Games in Vancouver, the pairs figure skater sustained torn ligaments in his shoulder that would prevent him from competing on home ice. It was a setback, but he ably pivoted toward the next chapter. Buntin went on to complete an MBA at Desautels, and is now the CEO of SportLogiq, a Montreal-based company that uses standard sports game footage to track players and generate automated game statistics.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine was not unexpected, but its scale surprised many. “There was a common expectation of escalation in the East and the South,” says Mykhaylo Petechuk (MBA’13), who has worked for McKinsey & Company in Ukraine. “But no one expected the launch of missiles into every region of the country.”
To celebrate the Class of 2022, McGill University will award 14 inspirational individuals honorary degrees — the highest order it can bestow — at the Spring 2022 convocation. Gabriel Gervais (MBA’08) has been named the President and CEO of Club de Foot (CF) Montréal, the city’s Major League Soccer team. Between 2002-08, Gervais was a player for the Montréal Impact, a predecessor of CF Montréal that played in the United Soccer League and later, the North American Soccer League. After his playing career, Gervais completed his MBA at McGill Desautels, and went to become a partner at Deloitte.
Desautels alumnus catalyzes crowdfunded bursaries for Lebanese students impacted by financial crisis
In the summer of 2020, the financial crisis in Lebanon deepened when a major explosion rocked the port of Beirut, causing extensive property damage and loss of life. By that time, Lebanese students studying at McGill were already in a bind – banking restrictions were limiting the ability of their families to access savings, and provide financial support. Jade Dagher (BSc’89, DipManTour’92, MBA’98) wanted to do something to help.
Desautels alumnus named International Educator of the Year by the Academic of International Business
Resilience. Caring. Integrity. These are the habits that Arshad Ahmad (MBA’81, PhD’2000) seeks to instil in his students. They can make an immediate impact on students’ career – and a positive impact on the people in their lives. Ahmad has been named the International Educator of the year by Academy of International Business (AIB), an organization of international business and management. He is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan, and an EMBA professor at McMaster’s DeGroote School of Business.
