Job Ad: Sessional Instructor, Ancient Greek Language and Literature
The Department of History, Classical Studies, invites applications for a 9-month appointment at the rank of sessional instructor, to begin September 1, 2009. The salary is $32,500 plus benefits. The successful applicant must have a PhD in hand or near completion, and must demonstrate the ability to teach ancient Greek at all levels. S/he will be expected to teach four courses (two per semester), including: a survey of Greek literature in translation, intermediate Greek, advanced Greek prose and poetry. Applications should be directed by email only (.pdf) to the Director of Classical Studies, Professor Hans Beck (hans.beck [at] mcgill.ca), and should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a one-page outline of relevant teaching experience, and the names and contact information of three people who can supply a written or verbal reference. The Society for Military History announced that 'The Cambridge History of Greek and Roman Warfare (2008)', for which Professor John Serrati served as a co-author, had won their Distinguished Book Award for 2009!

Professor Renaud Gagné has accepted a position as University Lecturer at Cambridge University. He will leave McGill with the beginning of the new academic year. Info regarding his teaching in 2009-10 and his replacement will be released soon.
A good-bye event for our wonderful colleague and friend will be held during this year's Hirundo Launch Party.

The prize winners of this year's Sight Translation Contest have been announced by the Classical Association of Canada. We are delighted to see that our students did very well in that exciting national competition!
Samantha Perera (U2) wins the Third Prize in Senior Latin (Peter Lawson Smith Prize).
Margherita Devine (U2) receives honorable mention in the same category.
Warren Huard (U3) receives honorable mention in Senior Greek.

Professor Hans Beck and Professor Renaud Gagné have secured two prestigious research grants for Classical Studies.
Beck's work on "Ancient Worlds Elites", a joint research project with Professor Griet Vankeerberghen, receives SSHRC funding for 2009-2011 (RDI).
Gagné obtained a research grant from the Loeb Classical Library to carry out his research on "Choral Intermediality: Pragmatics and Perspective in Greek Drama".

Professor Hans Beck has joined the Advisory Board of Blackwell's Encyclopedia of Ancient History.
Designed as a twelve volume project, the encyclopedia is intended to lead to both a comprehensive print and electronic resource for the study of the history of the ancient world. It covers the entire Mediterranean world, includes the Near East and Egypt, and spans from the late Bronze Age through the seventh century AD.

Call for Papers
The Classics Students Association is calling for submissions for the 2009 Montréal Classics Colloquium. If you are an advanced undergraduate, graduate, or PhD in Classics or Ancient History and have a research paper you would like to present, please send it to classicsmontreal [at] yahoo.ca by no later than March 15, 2009 for review. Please note: Only 10 presentations will be selected, and these shall be organized according to theme.

"Roman Cyprus: Space and Power in an Island Province"
Classical Studies and the Pyla Koustopetria Archaeological Project (PKAP) host a one-day colloquium on Roman Cyprus. The event will feature a key note lecture by Professor Andreas Mehl (Martin-Luther-Universität, Halle-Wittenberg) and a formal response by Professor William Caraher (University of North Dakota), co-director of the PKAP. The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion. The colloquium will be held from 2:30-5:30 pm in Thomson House. Schedule:
