Doing History Workshop
Time: Mon & Wed 10:00-11:00
Duration: 5 weeks, starting April 15
Max: 22 participants
History enthusiasts can now take advantage of the unprecedented ease of access to authoritative sources of historical knowledge. Transformation of this knowledge into a visual form helps to reveal the complex spatial relationships between peoples, places and environments. This helps us to recognize patterns. We will look at the currently available tools that can be used by history enthusiasts to visualize historical knowledge. This approach to history will be illustrated through examples related to the story of North America from 1400 to 1800.
The moderator makes the presentation and facilitates the discussion that follows.

Donald J. Trump: The Impeached President
Time: Tuesday 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Duration: 5 weeks, starting April 14
Max: 22 participants
We live in unprecedented times. Never before has a president of the United States been impeached in his first term of office and run for re-election. Now fighting for his legacy, can Donald J. Trump sway enough voters particularly in the battleground states to give him an Electoral College win?
Can he turn the current health care crisis into an opportunity to demonstrate leadership? We will analyze just how strong his public support really is and whether Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is the candidate that moderate Republicans and Independents can rally around.

Beethoven's String Quartets, Beethoven's World
Time: Friday 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Duration: 5 weeks, starting April 17
Max: 22 participants
Our viewing, listening to, and discussion of Beethoven's Quartets continues at the point where we were interrupted when McGill and all other Québec universities were shut down by the coronavirus pandemic.
We'll continue viewing and discussing Robert Greenberg's outstanding course on the Beethoven Quartets, which will be streamed via the excellent Zoom software that MCLL has adopted for online courses. I'll have more time available this time around to prepare material on Beethoven and his times, both the social/political/economic context and the musical context.
For people who were not enrolled in the Beethoven String Quartets course, but wish to join us, I will provide a pdf file with the full transcript of Greenberg's lectures. People with library cards at the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec on rue Berri can download the audio versions of Greenberg's lectures via their subscription to the RBDigital online magazine and ebook service.
Your McGill library card gives you access to the Naxos Music Library, which streams multiple versions of the Beethoven quartets, alberit in MP3. For HiFi streams, TidalHD is the place to go for a reasonable monthly fee. If you want your own CD box set of the quartets, Amazon seems to have decided that March 2020 is Beethoven Black Friday month: several iconic Beethoven full SQ sets are selling for less than $30.
