A. Course Information
This course offers an introduction to the translation of semi-specialized texts (i.e. texts written by specialists for non-specialists) from Spanish into English. Students will translate several texts of varied typologies and genres related to mining and, in the process, learn the research techniques and translation strategies best suited to the challenges and particularities of each.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Recognize different typologies of specialized texts: Horizontal (subject matter) and vertical (grade of specialization), as well as their micro-textual features.
- Identify and differentiate translation challenges specific to the semi-specialized texts under study, and develop translation strategies (“strategy” is understood in a broad sense to include procedures, documentation mechanisms, techniques, etc.) to solve translation problems in accordance with a given translation brief (i.e. skopos).
- Locate, utilize and critically evaluate relevant terminographic documentation resources, both online and offline.
- Understand their own translation process (allocate time to the different stages of translation, apply self-revision practices).
- Demonstrate mastery of the main morphosyntactic, lexicosemantic, punctuation and writing conventions of English, and identify text typology differences between Spanish and English to produce a text that respects the cultural and linguistic norms of the English language.
- Recognize and use the metalanguage of translation when justifying their own work or when critiquing or revising another translator's work.

- Is this a credit course?
YCOTR 334 Spanish-to-English Translation is a non-credit course.
- How is the course structured?
YCOTR 334 is divided into three modules to be completed over a period of 12 weeks. Each module is composed of four learning units. This course adopts a blend of teaching and learning strategies, with a focus on flipped learning and problem-based learning. Students will spend time independently studying key concepts and techniques, and will then have the opportunity to apply the learned concepts and techniques in class. Students will also have the opportunity to solve translation problems and practice newly acquired skills in a series of graded and ungraded assignments. Students are encouraged to communicate with their peers using the chat function during online live classes, and using the peer discussion forum in myCourses during self-guided weeks. Ongoing instructor feedback and support will be available throughout the course.
- Is the schedule flexible?
Yes, but you must attend the online classes, follow the course calendar and submit your work on the dates specified.
- How many hours of work are required each week?
It is expected that you will devote approximately eight hours per week reviewing course materials and completing translation assignments.
- How will I be evaluated?
Evaluation is based on your individual translation assignments.

B. Registration Information
- Do I have to take a placement test before registering?
Not if you are a certified translator recognized by the Colegio de Traductores del Perú and are affiliated with Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas.
- When is the deadline to REGISTER for the course?
The deadline to register is August 15, 2019. Please register online by 5 p.m. EDT on August 15, 2019. Click here to register.
- When is the deadline to CANCEL MY REGISTRATION?
The deadline to cancel your registration is August 15, 2019. To avoid any financial charges, you must cancel your registration before 11:59 p.m. EDT on August 15, 2019. The tuition fee will be fully refunded, and the course will not appear on your record of study. There are no cancellations and no refunds after August 15, 2019.

Can I WITHDRAW from the course after it has started?
You may withdraw from the course but there is no refund after the course has started. If you wish to withdraw from the course after it has started, you must do so before 5 p.m. EDT on September 26, 2019. If you withdraw from the course, a final grade of “INC – Incomplete” will be entered on your record of study. There are no refunds for withdrawals.
