Gait

 

 

The pattern of a patient’s mode of moving on foot. It is usually analyzed by videotaping a patient while he or she is walking, from which recommendations for treatment can be made.

 

Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS)

 

A classification system to follow the development of children with CP as they age. Scores are given on a 5-point scale for the efficacy of gross motor function in home, school and community settings. Limitations in mobility are the most important factors while quality of movement is secondary.

 

Gross motor function measure (GMFM)

 

Used both as a research and clinical tool, and consisting of either 88 or 66 items, the GMFM is used to monitor fluctuations in gross motor function in CP patients. There are 5 main dimensions including lying and rolling, crawling and kneeling, sitting, standing, and walking running and jumping.

 

Goal Attainment Scaling

 

A method of assessing the effectiveness of a program in reaching pre-determined goals.

 

Goniometry

 

The act of measuring range of motion (see ROM) of a joint usually requiring the use of a protractor or goniometer.

 

Hemiplegia

 

One side of a patient’s body displays the symptoms associated with CP. The other side of the body may function normally and thus patients are capable of participation and fulfillment in daily activities.

 

International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)

 

Classification system setup by the World Health Organisation, portrays how people live with their condition in relation to the Body Functions and Structures, Activities and Participation in daily life. ICF website

 

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL)

 

 

Complex tasks that involve social or societal issues (shopping, bill paying, cooking, housework, etc) that are done on a regular basis.
