Research Project:

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that is released into the atmosphere from a variety of sources, including fossil fuel combustion, industrial processes, and deforestation. CO2 is a key contributor to climate change, and there is an increased need to develop technologies to capture and reduce CO2 emissions. One effective method for CO2 capture and conversion is through the use of dual-functional materials (DFMs). These materials can capture CO2 from a gas stream and then convert the adsorbed CO2 into more useful chemicals, such as methane. Different types of materials have been employed to fabricate DFMs. Among these is the dispersion of alkaline and alkaline earth metals over various types of supports to serve as sorbent sites. Then, active metals such as Ru, Rh, Pt, Pd, Ni, and Fe are loaded for methanation of the adsorbed CO2. Zeolites are a type of crystalline materials that have a porous structure and a high affinity for CO2. Zeolites can be functionalized with metals, which allows them to convert CO2 into more useful forms. Therefore, we will focus on the fabrication of zeolites that will be applied for CO2 capture and conversion, as well as serve as DFM for the integration of carbon dioxide capture and conversion.
