Montreal East Team
In 2008, eight students participated in community nursing internships at four English schools in Montreal’s East End. Description of planned Activities
This ambitious project aims to increase the number of students coming to have their field placement in the East End of Montreal. This area has an emergent community network and is in need of English-speaking professionals to develop services and to help francophone staff to communicate in English. The project offers students a supervised placement in both public institutions and with community groups. The first two years (2005-06 and 06-07) were preparatory with 11 student placements from McGill Social Work, Vanier College Nursing, and McGill Nursing in 2007-08.

Description of planned Activities
This project covers a range of health care professions all of which currently work in the Extended Care Centre in a multi-ethnic Francophone and Anglophone environment. The project seeks to recruit and retain bilingual personnel to replace a number of employees who will be retiring in the near future. Planning and set-up activities began in 2005-06 and continued in 06-07. In 07-08, 68 supervised field placements were offered, a large proportion of which were in practical nursing. Students also benefit from a range of training and social activities in the establishment.

Description of planned Activities
This project provides an integrated model of service delivery for persons with an intellectual disability or a pervasive developmental disorder by offering student placements in a variety of disciplines (social work, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and educational psychology). This initiative increases the number of English-speaking professionals available to serve this specific client group and their families. The project has many partners in the public sector. It offers students a wide range of supervised clinical experience (20 interns in 2007-08) as well as additional teaching on-site.
