Dr. Francis Mus, from the University of Leuven, Belgium, will be giving a talk entitled “How Should We Read Leonard Cohen?” Dr. Mus’s talk is co-sponsored by the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, the French Department , and Friends of the McGill Library.

The talk addresses Mus’s The Demons of Leonard Cohen, an essay on the work of Canada’s most famous songwriter, musician, poet, novelist and visual artist. The text treats seven themes: Cohen’s public persona, artistic practice, alienation, desire and loss, religion, power, and encounter. The Demons of Leonard Cohen is neither a biography nor a detached analysis but a thorough interpretation based on the artist’s musical, literary and graphic work, complemented by archival research at the Leonard Cohen archives in Toronto, Montreal and Hamilton and interviews with musicians and collaborators.

Time: 4:30pm-6pm

Location: Arts Building, room 260
