Construction start: McLennan Library – Convert 25kv distribution switches

Please be advised that McGill University has mandated La Cie Électrique Britton Ltée to carry out the following project: 17-160 McLennan Library – Convert 25kv distribution switches.

Description: Project 17-160 aims to replace the 25 kV distribution switches located in the MB 32 room of the McLennan building on McGill University's downtown campus. This equipment is critical for ensuring reliable electrical power supply to the McLennan Library, Bronfman, Armstrong, and Redpath Library buildings.

Construction start date: June 21, 2024

Planned construction end date: July 07, 2024

Work schedule: Preliminary work (June 21, 2024 – July 5, 2024)

Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Main work (July 6, 2024 – July 7, 2024)

From Saturday 6 a.m. to Sunday 7 a.m.

  • Decommissioning of existing units (Joslyn)
  • Installation and commissioning of new units (Elastimold)

Impact & mitigation

Service shutdowns:

  • Some work may require service shutdowns (e.g., electrical, ventilation). Building users will be informed in advance of these shutdowns.

Safety considerations

Demolition work involving asbestos-containing materials is planned until mid-July 2024

The project includes the drilling of Gypsum walls that contain asbestos. This work will be carried out under the appropriate asbestos safety protocols. This phase of the work is expected to be completed by Mid-July 2024. The safety protocols include a variety of protective measures, including, the use of specialized vacuuming equipment, specialized cleaning, and daily inspections by our health and safety consultant.
