The Scleroderma Patient-Centered Intervention Network (SPIN)

Principal Investigator: Dr. Brett Thombs

  • Systemic sclerosis, or scleroderma, is a rare chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease.
  • Since there is no cure for Scleroderma, a primary care goal is to maximize health-related quality of life, but clinical trials of psychosocial and rehabilitation interventions are lacking.
  • The objective of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN), a collaboration of patient organizations, clinicians, and researchers, is to develop an infrastructure that can be used on an ongoing basis to test accessible, low-cost interventions to reduce disability and improve health-related quality of life for people with Scleroderma.

Dr. Körner’s involvement with SPIN is centered on her role on the self-management of body image distress subcommittee.  This team is currently examining how living with Scleroderma influences women’s social, professional, and family identities and roles.

For additional details regarding Scleroderma and the SPIN project please consult the Behavioural Health Research Group wesbite.
