Lunch & Learn

One of the main features of the MIF is its support program for recipient teams, which includes access to the expertise of seasoned entrepreneurs. The MIF is proud to share some of this expertise to a wider audience by sharing the videos of our Lunch & Learn series. These informal online sessions are a departure from typical presentation-focused information sessions, instead offering viewers a chance to listen to unscripted discussions on a variety of topics. This page will be updated approximately once per month as new sessions are recorded. Alternatively, you can look at our Events page to see when the next Lunch & Learn session will be taking place, so you can watch live with a chance to ask questions.

Lunch & Learn 1: IP Strategy

The first Lunch & Learn took place on February 17th, with the following panellists: Christian Cawthorn (Norton Rose Fulbright), Lally Rementilla (BDC), Serge Shahinian (Lavery Lawyers), Jean-Nicolas Delage (Fasken). The discussion examined such issues as why start-ups and spinoffs need to think of IP strategy from the very beginning, and how IP strategy can ultimately influence the value of the company down the road.

Lunch & Learn 2: The Road from Researcher to Entrepreneur

The second L&L happened on March 17th, with the following panellists: Professor Mark Andrews (McGill), Mitchel Benovoy (Circle Cardiovascular Imaging) and Michael Mee (Amplitude Ventures). The session looked at how researchers can make the leap from the lab into the start-up scene, what are the pros and cons of that transition, and when do you know if you are ready to make that jump.

Lunch & Learn 3: Building Teams, Creating Culture

Taking place on May 5th, this 3rd edition of the L&L focused on company culture and how this can be a make-or-break aspect of any company. Panelists Mark Weber (McGill) and Victor Lanzo (Reveal Surgical) discussed their experiences in a variety of corporate settings that have influenced their view on why this is such a crucial piece of the startup puzzle. During the session, panelists referred to some books that may be useful resources. Here are the titles:

  • "Radical Candor" by Kim Scott
  • "What the heck is EOS?" by Gino Wickman & Tom Bouwer
  • "The Lean Startup" by Eric Ries
  • “How to Be a Star at Work” by Robert E. Kelley
